Cruising the Night – The Hijra Ethos

.flickr-photo { border: solid 2px #000000; }

.flickr-frame { text-align: left; padding: 3px; }
.flickr-caption { font-size: 0.8em; margin-top: 0px; }

Hijras love to spiritually cruise in the night, shocking people with their overt gestures , glamor and cosmetic beauty.

Hijra are night stalkers, night denizens, sleep is a misnomer for hijras, hijras sleep in the day time ..night is for full body massage under the hands of young raw masseur boys..the boys do it clinically but are highly paid for added nocturnal escapades.

The hijras of the high end , groom themselves well, are totally clean, and over bursting with seductive sexual charm. They put on designer labels, alluring fragrance , more musky to go with their persona.

Facial hair is the bane and curse of the hijra, some have got rid of it completely, some tweeze and others use facial hair removing creams.

Most of the hijras have invested wisely, into gold, real estate, most of the brothels at the red light area cages where women solicit are owned by the hijras.

The hijras on the top level are very rich and affluent community.. they donate generously too and religious functions they dont miss specially the Urus at some Dargah and Ganesh and Laxmi visarjans.

The hijras lavish lakhs of rupees on visiting hijra friends from their biradri..hijras are the finest host, some are ball breaking money lenders too..

As age old being a very scary and insecure proposition, the hijra adopts a eunuch or a normal child, taking good care , and trying to emulate a sense of security for his old age.

I know hijra s who have extended families, adopted daughters married in good homes and the hijra takes care of them without any strings attached.

The only secrecy lies in the Hijra death ceremony or burial..and they dont reveal this to anyone- this is their code of silence , their code of Hijra Omerta.

I used to meet hijras once upon a time at opium dens at Shuklaji..

Hijras are born dancers and large amount of income came from ladies dance bar that were banned in Mumbai.. for harboring terrorists.. a thought that shows political ignorance towards reality, and political shortsightedness ..
Prostitution is also the major source of the hijras.
The hijra does not have many legitimate options because of our pseudo sanctimonious society..they all want to fuck the hijra.. with and without his clothes on.

The lower end hijra is fully vulnerable and prone to all kinds of sexual disease , these are the beggars and the hijra street walkers in Mumbais red light areas.

I have met young jobless boys who wear ladies clothes and offer sex as low as Rs 50/
these are mostly migrants from Bihar , Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Some find Gurus and channelize their profession accordingly.

Most of the new hijras are found at Hijra Guly No1 Kamatipura..I have not been there since almost an year, last I had taken my American friend Dr Losack MD ..to shoot pictures.

I have a lot of Hijra stories locked up in my head , one day perhaps I shall tell it all..

The hijras are good friends and dangerous enemies..a hijra spurned is a thousand time more lethal than a woman..bobbit is a very tame understatement …

Badhai is more common in Delhi a great money spinner in other cities too, in Mumbai Badhai collection is minuscule..

The Flip Side of Shooting Hijras!

.flickr-photo { border: solid 2px #000000; }

Shooting Hijras is not as easy as it seems, it has taken me several years and even now I consider myself a novice in the arena of this androgynous field.
I am not as lucky as Marc de Clercq , my Belgian friend from Planet Gender.. he was born with a silver spoon given to him by an imaginary Hijra at birth..Marc has a way with Hijras I have never seen before and I confess unabashedly I emulate him , his pictures of Hijras has inspired me considerably..

He shoots Hijras with dignity and grace..

I am lucky thanks to my Hijra Guru Laxmi Narayan Tripthi, that several hijras now respect me as photographer and as a human being.

All these pictures of hijras shot at Ajmer are captured in a single day and a few hours of the night of of my arrival..besides I shot other stuff too..equally sharing my time between Hijras and the rafaees..

I kept my mobile phone on silent mode ,took no calls , did not carry my insulin or diabetic medicine, left my health to the will of God.
I was completely barefeet , in heat filth and dirt..

Over the years I have been threatned by Hijras , provoked abused , but I shot the Hijra and the Red Light area of Mumbai several times ..

And I miss Heena Hijra from the Mumbai Cages ..she was my support base shooting pictures of their eternal pain.

I shall shoot Hijras at Girgaum Chowpatty during the coming Ganesha Visarjan.. I will not follow Lalbagh Cha Raja this year till Kumbhar Wada….I will park myself at Girgaum Chowpatty as I did over the years.

A few days back I shoot the beggar Hijras at Versova will post after I complete this long series of the HIjras of Ajmer.

However I thought Haji Malang was more convenient to shooting pictures of Hijras despite the opposition in my case from a few Hijra Gurus..

Some in the Hijra community want the Hijra ethos to remain secret and esoteric.. pictures of Hijras according to them make the Hijras vulnerable to vested interests.. I am told.

This morning I have decided to move out of Facebook, I will post pictures at Flickr and cross blog the Hijra ones to my Hijdaeunuchblogs..my poems to my home site and some at Live Journal and Vox.

I have stopped posting at Fotothing too..
No more Posterous no more Scribd.

I moved out of Alpha Inventions a few months back, nothing personal ,as whether I link my Flickr posts to them, or dont link my average daily visitors at Flickr are over 11000 ..as my blog stats show ..

I will with another 150 pictures cross the 84000 blogs at Flickr in 25 months.

I have no regrets removing my Flickr comment box completely.. a comment box without Comment Moderation makes no sense to my controversial blogs on diverse faith and life styles.
I am fed up of being called names , I am fed up of having the subjects of my pictures insulted and humiliated because they are a minority within Islam like the Shias or the Sufis, or the disfranchised like the Hijras on a human landscape..

I have nothing against any religious thought but I found the adherents of Whabbism to be the most vicious in their remarks and in their attitude towards Muslim minorities, ably promoted by Mullahs of rabid hate against Ahle Bayt..

I will reiterate Muslims love killing Muslims more than anyone, and philosophies of radicalism, puritanism, created the monsters of Terrorism in Islam..thereby destroying all that we stand for..all that we hold upright as Brotherhood and Peace..

I fail to understand that seeing the Shias bleed on Moharam gets everyone’s sanctimonious goat yet , the killings of innocent people by the terrorist forces brings no response of disapproval, yes it is our eunuch silence that is anti Islam, a silence that one saw at Karbala where Imam Hussain breathed his last.
This is a single protest at Flickr – without having joined a single group..

I think I will cut my internet time to half..I shall post stuff at Twitter through the blog link at Flickr..

The Hijras of Ajmer

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijra_(South_Asia)

In the culture of South Asia, a hijra (Urdu: ہجڑا ,Hindi: हिजड़ा), is usually considered a member of “the third gender” — neither man nor woman. Most are physically male or intersex, but some are physically female. Hijras usually refer to themselves linguistically as female, and usually dress as women.

Although they are usually referred to in English as “eunuchs”, relatively few have any genital modifications.[1]

The Urdu and Hindi word “hijra” may alternately be romanised as hijira, hijda, hijada, hijara, hijrah and is pronounced [hidʒɽaː], between “heejra” and “heejda”. An older name for hijras is kinnar, which is used by some hijra groups as a more respectable and formal term. An abusive slang for hijra in Hindi is chhakka(छक्का). Another such term is khasuaa(खसुआ) or khusaraa(खुसरा).

In Bangla “hijra” is called hijra, hijla, hijre.

A number of terms across the culturally and linguistically diverse Indian subcontinent represent similar sex/gender categories. While these are rough synonyms, they may be better understood as separate identities due to regional cultural differences. In Tamil Nadu the equivalent term is Thiru nangai (daughter of god), aravanni, aravani, or aruvani. In Urdu and Punjabi, both in Pakistan and India, the term khusra is used. Other terms include jankha. In Gujarati they are called Pavaiyaa (પાવૈયા).

In South India, the goddess Yellamma is believed to have the power to change one’s sex. Male devotees in female clothing are known as Jogappa. They perform similar roles to hijra, such as dancing and singing at birth ceremonies and weddings.[2]

The word kothi (or koti) is common across India, although kothis are often distinguished from hijras. Kothis are regarded as feminine men or boys who take a feminine role in sex with men, but do not live in the kind of intentional communities that hijras usually live in. Local equivalents include durani (Kolkata), menaka (Cochin),[3] meti (Nepal), and zenana (Pakistan).

Hijras are widely referred to in English with the term “eunuch” or hermaphrodite, although LGBT historians or human rights activists might label them as being transgender.

[edit] Gender and sexuality

These identities have no exact match in the modern Western taxonomy of gender and sexual orientation. Most are born apparently male, but some may be intersex (with ambiguous genitalia). They are often perceived as a third sex, and most see themselves as neither men nor women. However, some may see themselves (or be seen as) females,[4] feminine males or androgynes. Some, especially those who speak English and are influenced by international discourses around sexual minorities may identify as transgender or transsexual women. Unlike some Western transsexual women, hijras generally do not attempt to pass as women. Reportedly, few have genital modifications, although some certainly do, and some consider nirwaan (”castrated”) hijras to be the “true” hijras.

A male who takes a “receptive” or feminine role in sex with a man will often identify as a kothi (or the local equivalent term). While kothis are usually distinguished from hijras as a separate gender identity, they often dress as women and act in a feminine manner in public spaces, even using feminine language to refer to themselves and each other. The usual partners of hijras and kothis are masculine men, whose gender identity is as a “normal” male who penetrates.[5] These male partners are often married, and any relationships or sex with ‘kothis’ or hijras are usually kept secret from the community at large. Some hijras may form relationships with men and even marry,[6] although their marriage is not usually recognized by law or religion. Hijras and kothis often have a name for these masculine sexual or romantic partners; for example, panthi in Bangladesh, giriya in Delhi or sridhar in Cochin.[3]

[edit] Becoming a hijra
This section needs additional citations for verification.
Please help improve this article by adding reliable references. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (July 2008)

Becoming a hijra is a process of socialisation into a “hijra family” through a relationship characterised as chela “student” to guru “teacher”, leading to a gradual assumption of femininity. Typically each guru lives with at least five chelas; her chelas assume her surname and are considered part of her lineage. Chelas are expected to give their income to their guru, who manages the household. Hijra families are close-knit communities and often have their own houses.

This process may culminate in a religious ritual that includes emasculation (total removal of the penis, testes and scrotum in men). Not all hijras undergo emasculation, and the percentage of hijras that are eunuchs is unknown. The operation — referred to by hijras as a nirvan (”rebirth”) and carried out by a dai (traditional midwife) — involves removing the penis and scrotum with a knife without anesthesia. The cry and wail of the target is covered with loud trumpeting. In modern times, some hijras may undergo a vaginoplasty, allowing them to experience vaginal intercourse, but such cases are rare. The American transsexual activist Anne Ogborn became an initiated Hijra in 1993. She is thought to be the first Westerner to be a member of the Hijra community.[7]

[edit] Social status and making a living

Most hijras live at the margins of society with very low status; the very word “hijra” is sometimes used in a derogatory manner. Few employment opportunities are available to hijras. Many get their income from performing at ceremonies, begging, or prostitution — an occupation of eunuchs also recorded in premodern times. Violence against hijras, especially hijra sex workers, is often brutal, and occurs in public spaces, police stations, prisons, and their homes.[8] As with transgender people in most of the world, they face extreme discrimination in health, housing, education, employment, immigration, law, and any bureaucracy that is unable to place them into male or female gender categories.[citation needed]

Hijras have earned an income from the Indian government for collecting taxes from the villages and cities, the most effective method ever employed by the India government in collecting taxes still used in some cities.[citation needed]
A young Hijra from Goa India.

Hijras are often encountered on streets, trains, and other public places demanding money from young men. If refused, the hijra may attempt to embarrass the man into giving money, using obscene gestures, profane language, and even sexual advances. Hijras also perform religious ceremonies at weddings and at the birth of male babies, involving music, singing, and sexually suggestive dancing. These are intended to bring good luck and fertility. Although the hijra are most often uninvited, the host usually pays the hijras a fee. Many fear the hijras’ curse if they are not appeased, bringing bad luck or infertility, but for the fee they receive, they can bless goodwill and fortune on to the newly born. Hijras are said to be able to do this because, since they do not engage in sexual activities, they accumulate their sexual energy which they can use to either bestow a boon or a bane.

The hijra can also come as an invitee to one’s home, and their wages can be very high for the services they perform. Supposedly, they can give insight into future events as well bestow blessings for health. Hijras that perform these services can make a very good living if they work for the upper classes; in 2005, a hijra accepted offerings of close to 5000 rupees for approximately twenty minutes of work.

[edit] Politics and activism

Many modern hijras, faced with health concerns and discrimination, have become politically active. For example, the All-India Eunuchs’ Welfare Association was formed in 1993-94, as well as HIV/AIDS awareness groups to combat health problems within their communities. One such group is the Dai Welfare Society, a mutual aid society formed in 1999 in Mumbai by and for hijras. The group estimates that half of the hijras living in Mumbai have HIV.[9] Another group is the Hijra Kalyan Sabha.

Hijras have been elected to high political positions; Shabnam Mausi became India’s first hijra MLA in 1999 (as an independent), only five years after hijras were allowed to vote.[10] Another, Kamla Jaan, was elected as mayor of Katni, while another, Meenabai, became the president of the Sehora town municipality, the oldest civic body in the state of Madhya Pradesh.[11] In 2005, 24-year-old hijra Sonia Ajmeri ran for state assembly on an independent ticket to represent the estimated 40,000 eunuchs in Gujarat. The wave of hijras entering politics has not been without controversy. In November 2000, Asha Devi was elected mayor of Gorakhpur, a post reserved for a woman. The city had a population of approximately 500,000 as of 1991. She was unseated when a court decreed that she was a man,[12] but was later reinstated.[citation needed]

In Bangladesh, some NGOs perform welfare works for hijra and other sexual minorities. Bangladesh Association for Gays (BAG) was the first internet-based organization to support hijra, kothi, panthi and other sexual minorities. Others, such as Gay-Bangla and Queer-Bangla also support the hijra community. In Khulna city, the hijra community is active in teaching HIV/AIDS awareness.
The Rainbow Flag for Bangladeshi LGBTIQ People.

[edit] History

The ancient Kama Sutra mentions the performance of fellatio by masculine and feminine people of a third sex (tritiya prakriti).[13] This passage has been variously interpreted as referring to men who desired other men, so-called eunuchs (”those disguised as males, and those that are disguised as females”[14]), male and female transvestites (”the male takes on the appearance of a female and the female takes on the appearance of the male”),[15] or two kinds of biological males, one dressed as a woman, the other as a man.[16]

During the era of the British raj, authorities attempted to eradicate hijras, whom they saw as “a breach of public decency”.[17] Anti-hijra laws were repealed; but a law outlawing castration, a central part of the hijra community, was left intact, though rarely enforced. Also during British rule in India they were placed under Criminal Tribes Act 1871 and labelled a “criminal tribe”, hence subjected to complusory registration, strict monitoring and stigmatized for a long time, after independence however they were denotified in 1952, though the century old stigma continues [18].

In Hindu contexts, hijras belong to a special caste. They are usually devotees of the mother goddess Bahuchara Mata, and/or Shiva.

In Tamil Nadu each year in April/May, hijras — or aravanis, as they are called there — celebrate an eighteen-day religious festival. The aravani temple is located in the village Koovagam in the Ulundurpet taluk in Villupuram district, and is devoted to the deity Koothandavar, who is identified with Aravan. During the festival, the aravanis reenact a story of the religious epic Mahabharata: the mythical wedding of Lord Krishna (who had assumed the form of a woman) and Lord Aravan, son of Arjuna, followed by Aravan’s subsequent sacrifice. They then mourn Aravaan’s death through ritualistic dances and by breaking their bangles. An annual beauty pageant is also held, as well as various health and HIV/AIDS seminars. Hijras from all over the country travel to this festival. A personal experience of the hijras in this festival is shown in the documentary India’s Ladyboys, by BBC Three and also on the television series “Taboo” on the National Geographic Channel.

Yesterday the Shia community ion Mumbai celebrated 13 Rajjab , a month on which Hazrat Alis birthday falls, he is also known as Imam Ali and was born in the holy precincts of the holy Kaaba.

This is one great and awesome day, every house has a event called Nazar, Kheer and Channa , is served , ours was a very grand affair, we had Zam Zam Pilav, a mixture of nine type of ingredients including chicken, this was a ladies function, so my computer was out of bounds..

I shot pictures of the table display..and tasted the kheer which was absolutely delicious..
At Kaisar Bagh there was a procession commemorating the same I did not go, I had to baby sit Marziya at my shop.

I will post the pictures after I finish my Ajmer lot of this series.

My computer is giving me a lot of trouble as mentioned earlier, because of some virus intrusion I think..

This is merely an Introduction to 13 Rajjab at my house..

I also shot a few pictures of 13 Rajjab at my computer tech Ashiq’s house .

yeh din ali ka hai
yeh shaam , shaam e ali
meri har saans he banaam e ali
fakhr se jhum jhum jata hoon
jab khaey koie mujhe Ghulam E Ali.

Legalizing Gay Sex and the Hijra

She requested me not to shoot her picture , she had a few days back got married to her toy boy, they had come to Ajmer Sharif to place a chaddar on the fulfillment of their marital bliss and were really taken in by each other.
This was much before gay sex became legal in Delhi..I told her I would shoot her back, she agreed , and I have not directed the shot ..it is natural and spontaneous as you can see ..

Now Gay Sex is became an issue with the Catholics they say it is against the nature of man and god, it should be banned., the Muslims the Hindu right wingers all are up in arms..including the Sikhs.

However Article 377 the draconian sodomy law is against the fundamental right of man as far consensual same sex goes..it was a guilt of the fucked Englishman dumped on the soul of our nation, a nation that gave the entire world the manual to make sex without just being missionary..we gave them Kama Sutra ,they turned it upside down and gave it back to us as porn..this is what you call the western mans sense of ingratitude and sick sense of toilet humor.

Well I am ambivalent but as a friend of the hijras ,a marginalized society of untouchables I feel its time we became more mature more tolerant to changing times..gave people the basic rights to live they want to live without hurting the sentiments of the nation, terrorism is worse than issues of same sex, or gay sex , they should be bought under the scanner..

Homosexuality has always been there and will always be there law or no law , it has survived 149 years of being criminalized , I think making it legal was the mature and finest acumen of judgment on the part of the erstwhile judges of the Delhi High Court.

Behind me is the Bulund Darwaza , within its passageway lies the Holy Shriine of Khwajah Moinuddin Chishty al Sabri..on top of the Bulund Darwaza on a normal day you can read the words of the Holy Saint embedded in every Shia person s soul, including the souls of those who love Imam Hussain the Apostle of Freedom from Tyranny.

Shah ast Hussain, Badshah ast Hussain
Deen ast Hussain, Deen Panah ast Hussain

Peersaab Fakhru Miya of Hujra No6 – At Home

Peersaab Fakhru Miya is a Sunni scholar, well versed in Sufism, Shiasm , who respects all religiosity, most of his hardcore disciples and followers are Hindus, he is not into conversion, the Hindus follow their own religiosity but have added Sufism as a part of their journey of life.

He has his sitting within the Holy Shrine it is called Hujra No6 , you enter it from Bulund Darwaza..I have stayed in this private chamber as his guest at his house , he has treated me like family, every trip that I have made to Ajmer , mostly during the Urus.
It is through Peersaab I saw Pushkar Brahma Mandir a few years back, he was the one who translated one of my dreams , and said Brahma wanted me to visit him ..I had a Sadhu Pandit as my guide who is the custodian of a 750 year old Hanuman Mandir also at Ajmer.

It was Peersaab who sent me to Taragadh foothills barefeet to the graves of the Hijra Saint and the grave of his biological son buried close to the grave of Bibi Jamal..

For Saif Shakir my youngest sons wedding reception , Peersaab was there to bless him ..so you can now see that his contribution to my life has been immense.

One of the very closest Murid of Peersaab is Zaved Akthar and his wife Afreen from Bangla Desh , so Peersaab has a lot of followers in Bangla Desh too.

Sheetal Bawa from Indore , Ramesh Bhai from Pune , and so many others are there to be by his side during the Ajmer Urus.

There are some very interesting people I have met at Peersaabs hujra no6, but the most amazing experience of my life was shooting the Whirling Dervesh of Ajmer at a event celebrated on the eve of Chatti on the terrace of his house..I was totally new to this choreographed moment of high never felt before…I have decided to learn this form as I too go into a trance called Kaiff.

Peersaabs grand children are Ahmed Ali and Zam Zam, totally in control, and inheritors of his legacy and wealth of his wisdom.
His two sons are the pillars of his Hujra No6 .. the eldest Farid Miya and the younger one Qambar Miya.

They tried to get me the permission within the Dargah but it was turned down citing terrorism as one of the reasons, and the gentleman in charge of the permissions, who saw my application and picture thought I was a girl and was a security risk..

Anyway in spite of his shortsightedness in just 1 day and one night I had shot a 12 GB card , subjects being the beggars, rafaees , the hijras and street photography.

I arrived at the Ajmer Dargah area on the night of 28 th June 2009 8.30 pm , I shot all of 29 th June till 30 th June morning , ..when I took the Aravalli Express that left for Mumbai at 11.15 am..

This is the beginning of my second 4 GB card ..and I dedicate this post to Peersaab..
I ate all my meals including breakfast at his house..during my stay in Ajmer..

The only stuff I bought from Ajmer from Kapil Agarwals gemstone shop are Dure Najaf , that Kapil said were a pair, Shiva and Parvati and some rectangular agates.. or Sulaimani Akik..

I bought nothing else.

Also I must mention here the most interesting Murid of Peersaab is Zubair Bawa , a great lover of Imam Husaain who publicly curses the enemies and killers of this beloved Imam , the martyred grand son of the Holy Prophet of Islam.

Zubair Bawa has 200 names given to him by his followers mostly lesser malangs and hijras.

I normally dont view the pictures I shoot till I post them at Flickr ..I have not seen the pictures of the Dancing Dervesh but I have a gut feeling they are my best effort in unlearning photography.

The Kinnar, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

He is a Kinnar another name for the Hijra , I have known him for several years , as he is part of Gopal Hajis Hijra household. We meet year after year here at Motti Katla Ajmer outside the quintessential tea shop, some of my best hijra pictures of hijras have been shot at this hijra watering hole..

Ajmer is one place that drinks are taboo, but charas or hashish is a common feature , the hijras too smoke the chillum abundantly.

Below article from the most resourceful hijra site

hijra.0catch.com/

excerpts

Hijra means “impotent one” in Urdu. In Hindi, hijra may be spelled hijada, hijara, hijda, hijira, or hijrah, and is pronounced somewhere between “heejra” and “heejda”. An older, more respectable term for hijra is kinnar. An abusive slang Hindi term for hijra is chakka.
Some hijras were made to be literal eunuchs — some of them against their will. The process isn’t ordinarily a pretty one, usually carried out without the aid of modern anesthesia or antibiotics. Most, however, are transgender of some sort and choose to foreswear their lives as men while retaining their sex organs. A few, however, are intersex and are considered to be “born eunuchs.” Hijras are usually considered to constitute a third sex or third gender in that they are neither men nor women. (Not coincidentally, both hijras and two-spirits — Native American “Indians” who are also of a third gender — have been said to refer to themselves as “not men, not women.”) Hijras don’t all look at themselves the same way. Some see themselves — or are construed by others — as females, feminine males, transsexuals, or androgynes. There are also female hijra, called hijrin, which are not the same as sadhin.
The term mukhanni may or may not be a synonym for hijra. Another such term is ali. The relatively new (as of 2003) Aravani (aka aravanni, aravani, or aruvani), originated in Tamil Nadu, was popularized in India as a politically correct term to describe members of the third gender, yet it applies more to the devotees of Kutandavar Aravan (India’s god of the ali) than those of Bahuchara Mata (the goddess of the hijras). In Urdu and Punjabi, both in Pakistan and India, the term khusra is sometimes used. In Gujarati, they are called Pavaiyaa. Another term is jankha.
The term koti (aka kothi) refers to males who take a “receptive” or feminine role in sex. They are usually not conflated with hijras, although they often dress as women and act in a feminine manner.

An all-around introductory explanation of hijras is stored on this very site, here. If you are reading this and have information which you feel might be helpful to this site, please send an e-mail message to .
This page is linked to the Androgyne Online website because hijras have some things in common with androgynes — like being of a third gender, for example.

What is the difference between a eunuch and an androgyne? Well, for one, most androgynes have a gender identity of neither a man nor a woman, while eunuchs tend to have a feminine gender identity closer to that of a transsexual than an androgyne. Is there a tendency to conflate androgynes with eunuchs? Perhaps. And yet, not all eunuchs are hijras, and not all hijras identify as transsexuals or androgynes.
Many would argue that it wouldn’t be entirely inappropriate to refer to a eunuch as an “it,” but even an agendered androgyne would probably object to being called an “it.” Androgynes might bend over backwards trying to use terms like sie (pronounced SEE) instead of he and she; and hir (pronounced like “hear”) instead of him or her; but surely, they would like to avoid “it.” Why is that, I wonder? If one truly is agendered and wants to make an issue of it, why not reclaim the term “it” like some blacks have reclaimed “n*gg*r” and some gays have reclaimed “queer”?
Finally, for those interested, there is a special type of agendered androgyne or eunuch known as neutrois.

I have been shooting him for several years, his name is Zanjirwale Bawa , I have a separate set of his pictures on Flickr also..He is bound to chains permanently all welded so he cannot remove them at all, within the gap of the chains are bleeding sores,he does not bathe, but he does not stink either, if he bangs his head against the wall, fragrance of rose emanates from his being..

This time one of his devotees has given him a a motorbike with a special carrier for him to ease his travel, he has a driver too for the bike..

I missed Bawa when I arrived late in the night at Ajmer on 28 th June 2009 ..I could not see him, when I shot the earlier pictures, this was a lot I shot the following morning on 29 June 2009 ..

Bawa wears chains in memory of the Fourth Imam Zainul Abedin, and Bawa is a Sunni .also a firm believer of Imam Hussain and the Ahle Bayt..

He curses the killers of Imam Hussain openly in public.

Bawa and I share a very unique relationship..that began first at the Tomb of the Holy Saint of Chancawalli in Andheri..East.Mumbai..and has continued and flourished till date.

All these pictures that I have posted so far both of the Urus and the Hijras were shot in a single night , the night I arrived in Ajmer 27 June 2009 ..I shot a 4 GB card in a few hours.

I have come to terms with my life as a blogger here on Flickr, I have decided to remove the comment boxes from all my new sets , I have also decided not to comment on anybody’s post for sometime or perhaps completely, I am fed up of saying nice shot, nice capture , the very thought kills me..

Most of the time a comment by me is misunderstood, and an incident that happened recently has put me off completely of comments and commenting here on Flickr , I owe no one , no one owes me, I am humble I can apologize for an unintentional hurt and will not lick ass even if it is 100 American or made in New Orleans ..

I will block friends if the need arises..I have done it already.. I am one mad Indian blogger who wont take shit anymore, you dont like my stuff move on..I am still in bed ..and maybe you might take this as my viral rant but it is for real..

From Moti Katla I came to my host and benefactor Peersab Fakhru Miyas house dropped all my stuff and came to meet him at his spiritual darbar Hujra no 6, I paid my respects to him,at the Hujra , taking his permission I wandered out, collected my camera from his house , as photography is totally banned in the Dargah premises..

From there I went and paid my respects to the Head of the Rafaees Nobat Ali Baba at Char Yar than I met the Hijra Bawas the Malangs who live on the graves.

Finally I made my way to Moti Katlla to shoot Hijras ..I shot this hijra damsel, but she was rude to me in the beginning, I asked her the reason, it turned out to be a very flimsy one.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moinuddin_Chishti

Sultan-ul-Hind, Hazrat Shaikh Khwaja Syed Muhammad Mu’īnuddīn Chishtī (Ajmeri) (Persian/Urdu: خواجہ سیّد محمد معین الدین چشتی اجمیری ) was born in 1141 and died in 1230 CE. Also known as Gharīb Nawāz (غریب نواز), or ‘Benefactor of the Poor’, he is the founder and the most famous Sufi saint of the Chishtī Order of South Asia. He was born in 536 A.H./1141 CE, in Sijistān, in Persian Khorasan, modern Iran[1]. He is also known as Sultān-e-Hind (The Sultan of India). He is a descendant of Muhammad through the Shī‘ī Imām, Ja‘far aṣ-Ṣādiq.

Mu’īnuddīn Chishtī grew up in a Persian family. His parents died when he was only fifteen years old. He inherited a windmill and an orchard from his father. During his childhood, the young Mu’īnuddīn was different from others and kept himself busy in prayers and meditation. Legend has it that once when he was watering his plants, a revered Sufi, Shaikh Ibrāhim Qundūzī (also called Kunduzi, after the birth place of the Sheikh, Kunduz), came to his orchard. Young Mu’īnuddīn approached him and offered him some fruits. In return, Sheikh Ibrāhīm Qundūzī gave him a piece of bread and asked him to eat it. The Khwāja got enlightened and found himself in a strange world after eating the bread. After this he disposed of his property and other belongings and distributed the money to the poor. He renounced the world and left for Bukhara in search of knowledge and higher education.[2]

Mu’īnuddīn Chishtī visited the seminaries of Samarkand and Bukhara and acquired religious learning at the feet of eminent scholars of his age. He visited nearly all the great centers of Muslim culture, and acquainted himself with almost every important trend in Muslim religious life in the Middle Ages. He became a disciple of the Chishtī saint ‘Uthmān Hārūnī. They travelled the Middle East extensively together, including visits to Mecca and Medina.

[edit] Journey to India

Mu’īnuddīn Chishtī turned towards India, reputedly after a dream in which Prophet Muhammad blessed him to do so, and after a brief stay at Lahore he reached Ajmer where he settled down. There he attracted a substantial following, acquiring a great deal of respect amongst the residents of the city.

[edit] Founding of the Chishtī Order in India

He apparently never wrote down his teachings in the form of a book, nor did his immediate disciples, but he laid the foundations of the Chishtī order in the city of Ajmer in North India. His firm faith in Waḥdat al-Wujūd (Unity of Being) provided the necessary ideological support to his holy mission to bring about emotional integration of the people amongst whom he lived.

The central principles that became characteristics of the Chishtī order in India are based on his teachings and practices. They lay stress on renunciation of material goods; strict regime of self-discipline and personal prayer; participation in Samā’ as a legitimate means to spiritual transformation; reliance on either cultivation or unsolicited offerings as means of basic subsistence; independence from rulers and the state, including rejection of monetary and land grants; generosity to others, particularly, through sharing of food and wealth, and tolerance and respect for religious differences.

He, in other words, interpreted religion in terms of human service and exhorted his disciples “to develop river-like generosity, sun-like affection and earth-like hospitality.” The highest form of devotion, according to him, was “to redress the misery of those in distress – to fulfill the needs of the helpless and to feed the hungry.”

It was during the reign of Emperor Akbar (1556-1605) that Ajmer emerged as one of the most important centers of pilgrimage in India. The Mughal Emperor undertook an unceremonial journey on foot to accomplish his wish to reach Ajmer. The Akbarnāmah records that the Emperor’s interest first sparked when he heard some minstrels singing songs about the virtues of the Walī (Friend of God) who lay asleep in Ajmer.

Mu’īnuddīn Chishtī authored several books including Anīs al-Arwāḥ and Dalīl al-’Ārifīn, both of which deal with the Islamic code of living.

Quṭbuddīn Baktiyār Kākī (d. 1235) and Ḥamīduddīn Nagorī (d. 1276) were Mu’īnuddīn Chishtī’s celebrated Khalīfas or successors who continued to transmit the teachings of their master through their disciples, leading to the widespread proliferation of the Chishtī Order in India.

Among Quṭbuddīn Baktiyār’s prominent disciples was Farīduddīn Ganj-i-Shakar (d. 1265), whose dargāh is at Pakpattan, (Pakistan). Farīduddīn’s most famous disciple was Nizāmuddīn Auliyā’ (d. 1325) popularly referred to as Mahbūb-e-Ilāhī (God’s beloved), whose dargāh is located in South Delhi.

From Delhi, disciples branched out to establish dargāhs in several regions of South Asia, from Sindh in the west to Bengal in the east, and the Deccan in the south. But from all the network of Chishtī dargāhs the Ajmer dargāh took on the special distinction of being the ‘mother’ dargah of them all.

A recent Bollywood movie “Jodhaa Akbar”, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, includes a qawwālī in praise of Mu’īnuddin Chishtī (”Khwāja Mērē Khwāja”). It depicts the Emperor Akbar being moved by the song to join the whirling-dervish-like dance that accompanies the song. The song is composed by A.R. Rahman.

[edit] Sufis of the Chishtī Order

He had more than one thousand khalīfas and hundreds of thousands of disciples. Sufis of different orders became his disciples and took ijāzah from him. Among the famous Sufis who trace their lineage to him are: Quṭbuddīn Bakhtiyār Kākī,Farīduddīn Mas’ūd, Nizāmuddīn Auliyā’, Amir Khusrau, Muhammad Hussain-i Gisūdarāz Bandanawāz, Ashraf Jahāngīr Simnānī, Aṭā’ Hussain Fānī and Shāh Jamāl Bābā Bahaya Aurangabadī.

Today, hundreds of thousands of people – Muslims, Hindus, Christians and others, from the Indian sub-continent, and from other parts of the world – assemble at his tomb on the occasion of his ‘urs (death anniversary).

Dogs and Indian Photographers Not Allowed at Ajmer Sharif

I start a new set at Flickr a very lengthy series Ajmer Urus 2009 , 3 cards of 4 GB each.. shot in two days , I had a 16 GB card too, but I did not use it, the reason being photography is totally banned within the precincts of the Dargah..

Permission is given on the whims of the Dargah authorities..the criteria of color is important ..racism exists in Holy Places too..

I applied for permission, presented my Press Card , my Pan Card two photographs, but as you see I dont look like a photographer so it was turned down as the Dargah authorities give permission to a white man first, the Indian photographer is deemed a terrorist according to the mind set of the people in charge..dogs and Indian photographers are not allowed at the Ajmer Sharif Urus..

My Belgian photographer friend was lucky enough to get the permission.

I have continuously stayed at the house of Peersaab Fakhru Miya Hujra no 6 my host, benefactor and patron every trip that I made to Ajmer Urus from 2005 to 2009, ..and I have shot Ajmer with the sincerity of my soul and Ajmer is my pictorial gospel, of the Message of Peace as expounded in love and brotherhood by the Holy Saint Khwajah Gharib Nawaz Moinuddin Chishty Al Sabri.

I call this Tablike Khwajah Gharib Nawaz..his message of humanity, this is the only Shrine that has millions of pilgrims from all over the world..no bar on caste color or community ..Hindus throng to seek the Holy Saints blessings you ask for a single wish he extends it to your unborn child too, such is the bounty of the Khwajah Gharib Nawaz.

I am not an adherent of Sufism, but I am touched by the Holy Saint who beckons me year after year, I am going through very bad times in my business this trip was not happening, but he pulled me across ..I shot for two days that made a moment seem like a life time.

I hold no grudge towards the Dargah authorities , but I would like to display my inner hurt publicly so one can read in black and white, as in some cases Indian photographers are allowed at the Dargah with cameras and arc lights only if Katrina Kaif comes in as she generates the hoopla for commercialism in spirituality.

This is Truth as I see it..and it should hurt those whom the cap fits..

81669 pictures at display on my Flickr photostream, of all religions I have shot , is my testimony as a blogger showing you a world within the narrow corridors of another world.

This year I shot the Hijras . I shot the Malangs at the graveyards of Char Yar, I shot the Bawas of Char Yar.,.I shot the gemstone markets, the beggars, Dhai Din Ka Jhopda, and on the last day shot a Mehfil on the eve of Chatti on the terrace of the house of my host Peersaab Fakhru Miya Hujra No 6 one of the specil spontaneous events was the Whirring Dervesh of Ajmer a sight you normally dont see in public but at privately..

I had traveled barefeet and remained barefeet till I reached Mumbai this morning at 7 am..my feet bled , I could barely walk, but I knew I would overcome the frailty of my flesh.I removed shards off glass in the evening from my tortured feet, and I did not carry my diabetic medicine or my insulin syringe at Ajmer , I felt if I come to a Spiritual Healer like Khwajah Gharib Nawaz why must I carry medicines , his love and affection protected me at all times.

I have a vardan of Hijras they cross my path at all times ..I must mention this significant detail..

I was boarding the train for Ajmer I was accosted by Hijras of Gharib Nagar Bandra ..and when I got off at Bandra Terminus I met hijras from Bombasy Central, who touched my feet and asked me to bless them..

Metaverse
it is not religion
But a racist system that
I curse .
wounds on my soul
an inner angst I nurse
humility the only currency
to reimburse
spirituality sometimes
is bartered for a purse

Muslims of Behrampada Bandra East Need You !!!!

This ends the series of pictures I shot on 25 June 2009..at Behrampada Bandra East.

My title too make others read this and see the pain of the people of Behrampada ..political parties must cut through party lines and bring aid and relief to these helpless people.

The one party that can do a lot just a single word from Shri Bala Saheb Thackeray and Shri Udhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena..could almost be a miracle in disguise..the situation is not about appeasing the Muslims but standing up for them as Mumbaikars even if the majority hails from UP or Bihar..

Even the MNS and Mr Raj Thackeray should come out in support of these unfortunate people in a bigger way and see that rehabilitation process is done more speedily without bureaucratic delay .On July 29 200 we are expecting heavy rainfalls , so action should be taken much before this dangerous zone arrives.

What saddens me there is no other organization that has come forward to alleviate the problems off this helpless souls, I think even if they are Muslims they need sympathy , care as they are our Indian brethren ,this is the time for the other communities to come forward with an olive branch.. it takes two hands to clap..
The relief agencies at Bismillah Compund are looking for donors , well wishers, another sad thought , there has been no collection drive by the Bollywood producers , directors and stars , earlier they did it for the serial bomb victims ?

Or is because these victims of harsh fate are Muslims that apathy is being shown to them..
An American lady miles across the oceans sent me this message at Flickr..

“Your people need help, Fizore. And you may be the only one in this case who can get them that help. Flickr is fine and so are blogs but Youtube is often where the real power is, or on Facebook possibly ……

Have you written the Red Crescent and Unicef? How bout some celebrities like Americans? Get George Clooney or someone aware of it and something may happen …….I mean hello there was enough controversy about “Slum Dogs” but it got attention and so now people are aware.

Or write Oprah, that woman has incredible power ……
