Lalbagh Cha Raja and The Muslim Blogger

Almost every shopkeeper, beggar shop vendor knows me at Lalbagh, thanks to Lalbagh Cha Raja who beckons me to his Court yea after year , this year I shot him extensively, all angles save from the stage..and I made just one trip after that I shot the Visarjan. I did not go for the auction as I had done last year..

Lalbagh Cha Raja may have many devotees , well wishers , but he has been over generous to the barefeet Muslim blogger of Mumbai..I have no words to describe these feelings..

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lalbaug

The Mandal, formerly known as ‘Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, Lalbaug’ was founded in the year 1928,[1] because of a vow (Navas) for construction of the present Lalbaug Market at its existing place. The market place at Peru Chawl was shut down in 1932. Hence, the fishermen and vendors who used to sit in the open place vowed to Lord Ganesh for permanent place for their market. With the consistent efforts & support of the then local Councillor-Late Shri. Kuwarji Jethabhai Shah, Dr. V. B. Korgaonkar, Shri.Nakhawa Kokam Mama, Bhausaheb Shinde, Dr.U.A. Rao and the local residents, the landlord Rajabai Tayyabali agreed to give a plot for construction of a market. As fulfillment of their wish, the fisherman and the traders established the Ganesh Idol on 12.09.1934. The idol was dressed in the customary fashion of fisherman. Since that day onwards, this Lord Ganesh has become popular as it fulfills the wishes of devotees. The Mandal was formed in the era when the freedom struggle was at its peak.

Due to the communal riots in 1946, orders were issued to change the route of this Ganesh Immersion Procession. But, the then office-bearers of the Mandal refused to change the route and, after 21 days, the procession was taken by the same route under the supervision of then Volunteers Pandurang alias Babu Sayle, M.S.Pawar and Dattaram Joshi. After independence, the agenda of the Mandal was modified and accordingly the Mandal decided to contribute in uplift of the Country. The Mandal donated its balance amount to the Kasturba Fund, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Fund in 1947 and to Bihar Flood Relief Fund in 1959. The social issues were also highlighted in the plots during Ganesh Festival.

During Silver Jubilee Year 1958, two different plots viz. ‘Geeta Upadesh’ and ‘Kaliya Mardan’ were set for 5 days each. In this Silver Jubilee year, eminent speakers – like M.L.Patil-Hon’ble Minister of Bombay State, Hon’ble Ganapatrao Tapase, Hon’ble Govindrao Adik, Hon’ble Maloji Nimbalkar, Municipal Corporator Dr.Narvane, Govinrao Mahashbde-Dy.Editor Navakaal, Vasantrao Kate, Govardhandas Mapara of Kamgar Seva Sadan, Kakasaheb Tambe, – delivered speeches.

After 1958, the number of devotees of Lalbaugcha Raja increased substantially. Hence, in 1960, the entertainment programmes and speeches were discontinued. In the same year, ‘Navaratri Utsav’ was started and the programmes were organized during Navaratri Festival. These transitions were carefully and neatly carried out by Chandrakant Khadye, Chunilal Rathod, Pranjivan Mehta and Shankar More. During this period, Late Shri. Shamraom V. Bodhe handed over the Hanuman Temple to the Mandal.

During 1948 to 1968, the Mandal started some new traditions like ‘Shri Satyanarayan Mahapooja’, ‘Pan-supari Samarambha (Get Together Function)’. The Get Together Function is the ceremony of felicitation by offering roll of betel leaf with betel nuts, known as Pan-Supari in Marathi. During this get together, eminent personalities of different fields, office bearers of various mandals and well-wishers are invited. This creates a friendly atmosphere for co-ordination & exchange of views for better performance of the festival and helps in improving relation among various mandals. In this manner, the mandal established a warm relationship with some mandals of Kumbharwada, Durgadevi Duncan Road, Kamathipura, Khetwadi, Navi Amrutwadi, etc. The participation of local mandals at night, was started to control heavy number of devotees.

During 1934 to 1968, Kunwarji J. Shah, Dr.V.B. Korgaonkar, H.B. Korgaonkar, Dr. U.A. Rao, Dr. Manju Madar, Ramchandra Tawate, B.D. Bandekar, Raghunath Khamkar, Pranjeevan Mehta, Rambali Halwai, Ram Jadhav were mainly responsible for development of the Mandal. The amount accumulated from the Mandal activities was mainly used for development of the nation. Mandal did its bit by contributing to the National Fund during floods at Bihar in 1959 and during the wars in 1962 &1965.

In 1969, new generation came up with wide view under the leadership of Late Shri Vasantrao Bhosale. Space requirement arose due to great extent of workload of the Mandal. In 1970, renovation of the Hanuman Temple was proposed. Accordingly, the renovation work was commenced in 1971 and completed in 1973, along with a new office for the Mandal. In 1975, Idol of Amba Mata (Goddess Amba) was established in the temple and the religious duties of Navratri festival were carried out in the temple, thereafter.

Since 1976, a part of the balance amount of the Mandal was deposited as ‘Shikshan Imarat Nidhi’.

During the Golden Jubilee Year in 1983, an exhibition was arranged in which plots of last 49 years were displayed. This exhibition was an attraction for the devotees. In the get together function of this Golden Jubilee Year, the ex-office bearers were felicitated with momentous.

During the decade 1984 to 1993, the Mandal carried out many other constructive social works. In 1990, the Mandal contributed Rs.15,000/- towards ‘Konkan Flood Relief Fund’, established by the Express Group for the flood affected people of Jambhulpada, based in Konkan, Maharashtra.

It is the first mandal who contributed Rs.1 Lakh to the ‘Army Central Welfare Fund’, in 1999 for the families of the soldiers who scarified their lives to uphold the dignity of the Nation at Kargil and the same was handed over to then Governor of Maharashtra State, Dr. P.C. Alexander.

During this computer age, Mandal launched its website www.lalbaugcharaja.com in 2000. Hon’ble member of the Mandal Shri Bharat Bhujbal conceived with the idea and took efforts to fulfill it. The information related to the festival, the social activities of the Mandal and photo gallery of Lalbaugcha Raja is available on the website. This is very useful for the devotees located in various parts of world.

Visarjan Tarafa: Traditionally the Ganesh idols are immersed in water during its Visarjan. Hence in order to immerse the idol of Lalbaugcha Raja, Mandal always takes proper precautions so that the visarjan takes place in a manner the Raja deserves. Accordingly, after consulting some experts & experienced persons, Mandal has purchased a Tarafa (Iron Raft) which makes it possible to dissolve the idol of Lalbaugcha Raja in deep sea water, conveniently. The Tarafa is prepared by M/s. A.V. Engineering.

The small plant ploughed by old, wise members of the Mandal has been converted into a large tree. Now it is looked after by the new generation members by their dedicated work. This will definitely continue forever, with blessings of Lalbaugcha Raja.
[edit] Present Day.

Population: Prominently Marathi speaking with a smattering of Gujarati and North Indian.

Lalbaugcha Raja for fulfilling the Wishes(Navashacha). It was started by Koli women(Fisher woman of Lalbaug).

Lalbagh Cha Raja is a singular moment of Peace beyond religiosity, and it is a moment that as I walk with him from Lalbagh to Chinchpokli to Byculla to Clare Road to Nagpada and to Do Tanki Kumbhrawadi.. I see without blinkers as a Shia Pandit..yes if saffronization of my soul brings me closer to humanity so be it..I shoot Lalbagh Cha Raja or he shoots me with a dart that remains embedded as love for this great city Mumbai..

Over 100000 blogs and my wife complains why do yuou shoot the same thing over and over again – I have no answers, I dont sell pictures , I dont make money of my blogs I am a bankrupt..but I touch people far into the hinterland of cyberspace, people touch my feet , taking me to be a holy man , that I certainly am not, but I bow my head in humility..I found the camera to be the greatest instrument of Peace , so instead of throwing my grand daughter in a swimming pool when she was 3 month old I began teaching her photography..

And my grand daughter Marziya Shakir can perhaps shoot Lord Ganesha better than me ..through her innocence and her mind.

Many years back on the beach at Girgaum Chowpatty my camera was seized my digital card formatted , because I accidentally shot the Visarjan of Lalbagh Cha Raja , the Mumbai Police can be very heartless even though I have a Press Card.. I was in tears , when I returned home spoke to Subash Solanki, who asked me to send the card to him and I got back all the Lalbagh Cha Raja last journey pictures..some moments even the Mumbai Police can never delete completely..

Mr Nulwala is a Bohra gentleman with a sanitary ware shop on Bandra Hill Road..dealing in plumbing items.

Mr Nulwala is a devout Muslim , a devoted father and a grand father too..in the early years of his life as Mr Nulwala confessed to me he was not very religious and skipped namaz, his father stopped taking meals and went on a fast as protest , he told his son that Namaz is the soul of Islam..either you change your ways or I will starve myself to death..

The entire family was distressed and the threat paid , today Mr Nulwalas son Nur his grandson Idrat are all namazis rushing to the Badri Mosque at Bazar Road Bandra..

The Bohras of Bandra are very cultured , peace loving people that add dignity and grace to the cosmopolitan fabric of Bandra.

They have added to the cultural charm of old Bandra giving respect to the East Indian heritage and the gaothan surroundings they live in..I talk of the Bandra Bazar Bohras..

Bandra Bohras are very friendly, and stand by you in times of need or calamity.. Photographing this community , and His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin has been the greatest joy..and my American photographer friend Dr Glenn Losack MD from Manhattan shot him too with the crowds running behind His Holiness’s car..and Glenn just could not believe this spiritual euphoria of the crowds….he was totally awestruck with this experience of his lifetime.

REKHA, 23, used to dance at Thane’s Valentina Bar before the authorities closed down dance bars and put her out of business.

But a new Bollywood film has raised hopes for her and others from Mumbai’s famous dance bars, of a possible career in cinema for which several have been cast.

In August, authorities of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, closed down the dance bars, saying they corrupt young men and breed crime and prostitution in India’s financial and entertainment hub.

PROSTITUTION

After the ban, many dancers went away to other states to find work while many more reportedly became prostitutes and thousands of others were left jobless.

‘The state’s decision has hit us hard,’ Rekha told the Indian Express. ‘Even those of us who were not into prostitution earlier have got into it – we just don’t have a choice.’

Rekha’s take-home pay is now a mere 200 rupees ($7.40) a day – a far cry form the 2,000 to 5,000 rupees she used to earn as a bar dancer.

But as a first step into the magic world of cinema, she doesn’t feel she’s done too badly.

Dozens like her have found work in the film Deepa Ki Tarannum, or Deepa’s Music, that tells the story of a bar dancer’s brush with crime, money and misery.

‘We decided to take in some 30 bar dancers because we thought they could best portray their lives,’ said Mr Ranjeet Sharma, the film’s producer.

The lead role in the film, scheduled for a May release, is being played by Preeti Jain, a Bollywood newcomer who hit the headlines last year for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill a filmmaker.

‘I’m excited (about the role) and I find it challenging,’ Preeti said. The male lead is played by Hyder Khan, the younger brother of Bollywood heartthrob Aamir Khan.

Bar dancers said they think the film could open a new employment avenue for them.

‘Since the ban, bar dancers have looked at Bollywood for work as junior artists. Looks like that option is opening up,’ said Ms Varsha Kale, spokesman of the Bar Girls’ Association.

‘More filmmakers are also hiring bar dancers for roles in their films. This is because bar dancers are ready performers.’

Mr Sharma, from 3’s Company, told the Indian Express he’s planning another film with former bar dancers getting parts to play.

‘I just approached these girls who were in distress and thought it would be better to take them into my story rather than do any research,’ he said.

‘They’ll be able to reflect their life better on celluloid than any actress.’

I start a new set at my Flickr photo stream, Chhat Puja 2009 ..I shot it this evening, barefeet dressed like a tiger cub no pun intended…the latest flavor and statement post election in Maharashtra.

I shot from end of the beach to another,Mr Sanjay Nirupams podium was very grand and awesome, the entire crowd was watching the song recital from the beach, I met him took a few frames and left..

I have been shooting the Chhat Puja Festival from the time Mr Sanjay Nirupam placed it on the festival map of Mumbai in a very big way.

I have tried never to miss this festival , and today I was in real bad shape I have not recovered from my viral fever but I made it to the beach…overriding all odds.

About Chhat Puja from Wikipedia

Chhath (Hindi: छठ, also called Dala Chhath) is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to Surya, the chief solar deity, unique to Bihar, Jharkhand and the Terai[1]. This major festival is also celebrated in the northeast region of India, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Chhattisgarh. Even in Tamil Nadu, the migrants from the north celebrate Chhath. Hymns praying to the sun can be found in the Vedas, the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism. Practiced in different parts of India, the worship of the sun has been described in the Rigveda.

The word chhath denotes the number 6 in Hindi [2]and the festival begins on the sixth day of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik, which corresponds to months of October and November in the Gregorian calendar (a week after Diwali). Chhath is the holiest Hindu festival of Bihar & eastern UP. It extends to four days.

The ancient Sanskrit epic Mahābhārata has references to Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas, worshipping the sun, which was believed to help cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, and ensure longevity and prosperity of family members, friends, and elders. In addition, it is believed that Chhath was started by Karna, the son of Surya, who became a great warrior and fought against the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra War.

This is the only holy festival which has no involvement of any priest (Pandit). People celebrates this festival by thier own.

It is celebrated twice a year: once in the summers (May-July), called the Chaiti Chhath, and once in the winter (September-November) around a week after Deepawali, called the Kartik Chhath. The latter is more popular because winters are the usual festive season in North India, and Chhath, being an arduous observance, requiring the worshippers to fast without water for more than 24 hours, is easier to undertake in the Indian winters.

Chhath is mainly a Bihari festival, and so it is celebrated wherever people from Bihar have migrated. This is a ritual bathing festival that follows a period of abstinence and ritual segregation of the worshiper from the main household for four days. During this period, the worshiper observes ritual purity, and sleeps on the floor on a single blanket. The main worshipers, called Parvaitin (from Sanskrit parv, meaning ‘occasion’ or ‘festival’), are usually women. However, a large number of men also observe this festival. The parvaitin pray for the well-being of their family, for prosperity and offspring. They can only perform Chhath if it is passed on to them from their older generation. However, once they decide to do it, it becomes their duty to perform it every year. The festival is skipped only if there happens to be a death in the family that year.

On the eve of Chhath, houses and surroundings are scrupulously cleaned. One the first day of the festival, the worshiper cooks a traditional vegetarian meal and offers it to the Sun God. This day is called Naha-Kha (literally, ‘Bathe and eat’!). The worshiper allows herself/himself only one meal on this day.

On the second day, a special ritual, called Kharna, is performed in the evening after Sun down. On this day also, the worshiper eats his/her only meal from the offerings (Prashad) made to the Sun God in this ritual. Friends and family are invited to the household on this day to share the prashad of the ritual. From this day onwards, for the next 36 hours, the worshiper goes on a fast without water.

The evening of the next day, the entire household accompanies the worshiper to a ritual bathing and worship of the Sun God, usually on the bank of a river, or a common large water body. The occasion is almost a carnival. Besides the main worshiper, there are friends and family, and numerous participants and onlookers, all willing to help and receive the blessings of the worshipper. Ritual rendition of regional folk songs, carried on through oral transmission from mothers and mothers-in-law to daughters and daughters-in-law, are sung on this occasion. The same bathing ritual is repeated on the following day at the crack of dawn. This is when the worshipper breaks his/her fast and finishes the ritual. Chhath being celebrated at the crack of the dawn on a river bank is a beautiful, elating spiritual experience connecting the modern Indian to his ancient cultural roots.

The folk songs sung on the eve of Chhath mirror the culture, social structure, mythology and history of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Nowadays, modern Chhath songs, largely Bollywood film remixes have caught on, but the old tradition still goes strong with a great degree of sanctity. The three main linguistic regions of Bihar: the Maithili, the Magadhi, and the Bhojpuri, and all the various dialects associated with these, have different folk songs; but have an underlying unity in their dedicated to Chhath. The minor nuances of the Chhath rituals, such as in the Kharna ritual, vary from region to region, and also across families, but still there is a fundamental similarity.

As per the yogic view point word Chhath is a compound of two words; Chah means 6 stages and Hath refers to the science of Hath Yog (austerity). The word Chhath refers to the process of consciously obtaining the solar energy through 6 stages involving the methods similar to Hath Yog. Hath here refers to the austerities like fasting, standing in water, etc. This entire process has been termed by the yogis as a Conscious Photoenergization Process having 6 stages.

Stage 1: Fasting and the discipline of cleanliness leads to detoxification of the body and mind. This stage prepares the body and mind of the Vratti (devotee) to receive the cosmic solar energy.

Stage 2: Standing in a water body with half the body (navel deep) in the water minimizes the leak of energy and helps the prana (psychic energy) to move up the sushumna (psychic channel in the spine).

Stage 3: Cosmic Solar Energy enters the Vratti’s pineal, pituitary and hypothalamus glands (Triveni complex) through retina and optic nerves.

Stage 4: Activation of Triveni (tri-glandular complex) Pineal, pituitary and hypothalamus

Stage 5: A kind of Polarization of happens in the spine, which results in the Vratti’s gross and subtle bodies getting transformed into a cosmic powerhouse. This can also lead to the awakening of the latent psychic energy popularly known as the Kundalini Shakti.

Stage 6: The body of Vratti (devotee) becomes a channel, which conducts, recycles and transmits the energy into the entire universe.

Mr Sanjay Nirupam and Me At Chhat Puja 2009 100,348 items / 615,278 views I start a new set at my Flickr photo stream, Chhat Puja 2009 ..I shot it this evening, barefeet dressed like a tiger cub no pun intended…the latest flavor and statement post election in Maharashtra. About Chhat Puja from Wikipedia Chhath (Hindi: छठ, also called Dala Chhath) is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to Surya, the chief solar deity, unique to Bihar, Jharkhand and the Terai[1]. Mr Baba Siddiqui erstwhile sitting MLA Mumbai Congress I/ NCP combine , won from the Vandre Constituency with a very slender margin defeating Advocate Ashish Shelar , since the results were announced there was some inter party skirmishes but the immediate arrival of the Mumbai Police saw calm and a greater calm prevailed at Bandra Bazar Road..basically it is vested interest bent on disturbing the canvas of peace of Bandra the Queen of Suburbs.

I did not shoot any pictures and thanks to the presence of the cops who were near my shop, there was a total ban on bursting of crackers..so the Congress Party NCP are back at the helm..let them bring constructive hope and solve the grievances of all concerned.

I met Advocate Ashish Shelar BJP who thanked me for shooting his rally..and hoped better luck in the next hustings and had the best regards for the winning candidate..

Now my poem

Ya Khuda
Break Dance
of Democracy ends
with your blessings
with your grace
the voter
the winner
to the Vidhan Sabha
sends ..
the loud mouthed losers
totally quiet
into the darkness blend
they have other jobs
to tend
choked
on the political
river bend
so many
fences to mend
for the sake
of the populace
their supporters
their friends
time to shake hands
make amends
the city
more important
than self on
good governance
good law and order
depends
please think
of the voters
in the hot sun
old poor very poor
who voted for you
some with their backs bent
some who never got their
voters cards were hellbent
the healing hand
is back in power
the homeless dont
torment
breaking their shanties
their tents
fires of divide and rule
dont foment
be kind to the north indians
treat them as
your own brother
without any evil intent
a new order
of peace hope and harmony
you must invent
thank them
with a nice Diwali present

Marziya Shakir is my 23 month old grand daughter ,she is aware of the camera, as she has seen me take her pictures since she was 2 days old, Marziya is a camera child, the camera has been bringing her life’s story to all of you.

Marziya can hold the Nikon D 80 ..she holds it like a professional assisted by me , than she bends her head into the viewfinder , I help her press the trigger..

The exercise here is not just about making her a photographer , it is to instill in her the power of the camera the greatest instrument of Peace.

The only instrument that shoots and you live forever.

The camera that holistically heals all human souls.

Marziya is my first and last student , she has watched me shoot perched on my waist, shooting into crowds at Bandra, at a few religious events save Moharam.

She has yet not been exposed to the blood shedding rituals of my Faith..

She has seen street kids , the poor umbrella lady who sits at Bandra Reclamation or Appu the limbless guy at Mahim.

She has given them money her first baby steps towards charity.

Marziya knows how to put the memory card into the camera , she knows how to put the card into the card holder and will place it into the computer monitor accordingly..

I could make her shooting easy by placing the camera on the tripod and allowing her access to the trigger , but I have not done it as yet..I have just this camera so I am not taking any chances , assisting her makes my task easier.

Only time will tell how good a photographer Marziya Shakir will be a few years from now.

I was down with viral fever and flu and have just added text to the blank space of this post
Even Marziya was not well thanks to the endless bursting of crackers that went on till the wee hours of the morning, she has recovered ..

Eunuch seeks right to vote in Maharashtra Assembly polls

PTI

Sunday, September 13, 2009 11:53 IST

Mumbai: An eunuch has moved the Maharashtra State Human Rights
Commission (SHRC) seeking the right to vote for his community and
transgenders in the forthcoming state Assembly polls.

In the four-page complaint, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi termed the denial
of Right to vote as gross violation of Human Rights in the state.

Supported by a group of four law students, Tripathi demanded that the
state government should extend the fundamental right of voting to
eunuchs and transgenders.

"There is a gross violation of the human rights of eunuchs in
Maharashtra. We are not provided with ration cards and not permitted
to vote," the complaint said.

The SHRC has issued notices to the chief secretary of the state
government with a direction to ensure that departments concerned with
ration cards and voter ID cards file their reply to the complaint by
November 4.

The commission has also directed the state government to suggest in
their reply affidavit steps being taken or to be taken with this
regard.

"Tamil Nadu government has already issued ration cards to the eunuchs
of that state. It is the only state to have recognised eunuchs as a
different sex," said the complaint.

Tripathi further said that eunuchs in Maharashtra are deprived of
life, liberty and dignity.

"If we (eunuchs) are not given a chance to lead a normal life then we
are left with the ultimate choice of begging or prostitution to earn
money," the complaint states.

The commission had directed the state government to file its reply to
the complaint by August 24 but the government failed to do so
following which they have been given time till November 4.

The students — Niraj Marjadi, Dharampal Dave, Jay Vakil and Kushal
Mehta — had earlier this year, filed an RTI application before the
Maharashtra State Election Commission seeking to know the rights
accorded to eunuchs in the state.

"However, the election commission returned the RTI application back
saying that they cannot reply to such applications," Dave said.

Dedicated to the spirit of gutsy Laxmi Narayan Tripathi my erstwhile Hijra Guru..

The Muslims of Bazar Road voted in great numbers , and this mother and daughter had just come from the polling booth..The Muslims of Bandra Bazar Road are very peaceful people living amicably with their Hindu neighbors, there is no ill will despite each belonging to another political party..The Muslims of this area were totally with the local candidate Rahebar Khan, and yet a similar large number supported Baba Siddiki of Congress Party.

Advocate Ashish Shelar BJP candidate too hails from this area, his supporters had various counters at Jain Mandir, Bazar Road,Bandra Reclamation..

These were the only areas I covered , some Muslims were reluctant to have their pictures taken but over all it was a political awareness day , though the turnout here in Bandra they say was about 42 %.

Most of the people I met did not have their names on the Voter list, some did not have Pan cards, others simply did not care or bother to vote.

Zeeshan Siddiki , good looking son of Baba Siddiki came to thank the volunteers of Congress I .
This area from the Bazar Chicken Market to Highland Court had the greatest number of counters , women , children kids, were all assisting the voter to reach their respective polling booth. No other area had such a strong counter base in Bandra as Bandra Bazar Road.

Most of the counters were belonging to Rahebar Khan Independent candidate.

Most of the volunteers were given delicious biryani mineral water and Vada Pav..most of the local guys who organize all this are paid handsomely by their respective parties I am told..Money is what matters and elections is about money power too..

Till the end there was a mad rush in this area , people running helter skelter to cast their vote.

Old feeble men and women wee being taken to the polling booth by various social activists and party members.,
