The Lingam (also, Linga, Shiva linga Sanskrit लिङ्गं liṅgaṃ, meaning “mark,” or “sign,”) is a symbol for the worship of the Hindu god Shiva. While its origins are debated, the use of this symbol for worship is an ancient tradition in India extending back to the early Indus Valley civilization.

The Sanskrit term लिङ्गं liṅgaṃ, transliterated as linga has many meanings, generally as a mark, sign, or characteristic.[1][2] It has a number of specific uses in Sanskrit that are derived from this general meaning. Vaman Shivram Apte’s dictionary gives seventeen definitions of the term, including these examples:

The image of a god
A symptom or mark of disease
A spot or stain
A means of proof, a proof, evidence
The effect or product which evolves from a primary cause
The concept of grammatical gender
The phallus
An example of the use of the word linga in general Sanskrit usage to represent the concept of “sign” occurs in this passage from the Bhagavad Gita:

kair liṅgais trīn guṇān etān | atīto bhavati prabho || 14.21 ||

This is translated by Swami Gambhirananda as “O Lord, by what signs is one (known) who has gone beyond these three qualities?”[3] and by Winthrop Sargeant as “By what marks is he recognized, Who has transcended these three qualities, O Lord?”.[4] In this quotation the word liṅgais is the instrumental plural form of liṅga, meaning “by what marks” or “by what signs”.

An example of use of the word linga as a technical term in philosophy is given in this passage from the Sāṃkhya-Kārikā which describes the role of attributes in recognition of objects perceived by the senses:

Perception is the ascertainment of objects [which are in contact with sense-organs]; inference, which follows on the knowledge of the characteristic mark (liṅga) [i.e., the middle term] and that which bears the mark….”[5]

The term lingam is sometimes used synonymously for shivalingam, a specific type of icon or altar representing the god Shiva

A. L. Basham says that linga have been found in the Harappan remains, and provides these comments relating to the antiquity of the symbol:

“… Śiva was and still is chiefly worshipped in the form of the liṅga, usually a short cylindrical pillar with rounded top, which is the survival of a cult older than Indian civilization itself…. The cult of the liṅga, at all times followed by some of the non-Āryan peoples, was incorporated into Hinduism around the beginning of the Christian era, though at first it was not very important.”[7]

Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami explains in the lexicon section of his book, Dancing with Siva, that “Sivalinga is the most prevalent icon of Siva, found in virtually all Siva temples. It is a rounded, elliptical, aniconic image, usually set on a circular base, or peetham. The Sivalinga is the simplest and most ancient symbol of Siva, especially of Parasiva, God beyond all forms and qualities. The Peetham represents Parashakti, the manifesting power of God. Lingas are usually of stone (either carved or naturally existing, swayambhu, such as shaped by a swift-flowing river), but may also be of metal, precious gems, crystal, wood, earth or transitory materials such as ice. According to the Karana Agama (6), a transitory Sivalinga may be made of 12 different materials: sand, rice, cooked food, river clay, cow dung, butter, rudraksha beads, ashes, sandalwood, darbha grass, a flower garland, or molasses.”

Furthermore, there are instances in Hindu lore where a rock or pile of sand has been used by heroic personages as a Lingam or symbol of Shiva. For example, Arjuna fashioned a lingam of clay when worshipping Shiva. Thus, it is argued, too much should not be made of the usual shape of the Lingam. This view is also consonant with philosophies that hold that God may be conceptualized and worshipped in any convenient form; the form itself is irrelevant, the divine power that it represents is all that matters.

Hindu interpreters often use the underlying meaning of “sign” or “mark” for the Sanskrit word linga as the basis for their commentaries. For example:

The name Lingam appears as a name of Shiva in the Shiva Sahasranama where it is translated by Ram Karan Sharma as “(Identifiable as) a symbol of the origin of the Universe.”[8]
Bansi Pandit, in his book, Hindu Dharma said, that “Shivalinga means “Shiva symbol.”
Swami Sivananda, said that “Linga means a mark, in Sanskrit. It is a symbol which points to an inference. When you see a big flood in a river, you infer that there had been heavy rains the previous day. When you see smoke, you infer that there is fire. This vast world of countless forms is a Linga of the omnipotent Lord. The Siva-Linga is a symbol of Lord Siva. When you look at the Linga, your mind is at once elevated and you begin to think of the Lord.” [1]
Western interpreters often use the concept of “male generative organ” as the basis for their interpretations. For example:

Monier-Williams provides one defition for lingam as: “The male organ… esp. that of Siva worshipped in the form of a stone or marble column…”[9].
Gavin Flood’s An Introduction to Hindusim refers to the worship of Shiva “in his form as the Śiva liṅga or ‘icon’ found in most Hindu temples. The linga represents a phallus…”[10]

Various interpretations on the origin and symbolism of the Shiva lingam obtain. While the Tantras deem the Shiva lingam a symbol representing the regenerative aspect of the material universe, the Agamas and Shastras do not elaborate on this interpretation, and the Vedas fail altogether to mention the Lingam. But acccording to Vivekananda, the worship of Shivalinga originated from the famous Lingam in the Atharva Veda Sanhita sung in praise of Yupasthambha, the sacrificial post.[citation needed]

In Hindu Dharma, Bansi Pandit explains that “Shivalinga consists of three parts. The bottom part which is four-sided remains under ground, the middle part which is eight-sided remains on a pedestal and the top part which is actually worshipped is round. The height of the round part is one-third of its circumference. The three parts symbolize Brahma at the bottom, Vishnu in the middle and Shiva on the top. The pedestal is provided with a passage for draining away the water that is poured on top by devotees. The linga symbolizes both the creative and destructive power of the Lord and great sanctity is attached to it by the devotees.”

In Veerashaivism, Siva divides from His Absolute state into Linga (Supreme Lord) and anga, individual soul, the two eventually reuniting in undifferentiated oneness. There are three aspects of Sivalinga.[citation needed]

Ishtalinga, personal form of Siva, in which He fulfills desires and removes afflictions — God as bliss or joy;
Bhavalinga, Siva beyond space and time, the highest divine principle, knowable through intuition;
Pranalinga, the reality of God which can be apprehended by the mind.
The soul(anga) merges with Siva(Linga) by a progressive, six-stage path called shatsthala and this is called Shunyasampadane- earning eternal nothingness.

According to Swami Dharmananda[11] who is a master of Yoga there is a mysterious power in the Linga, its shape has been designed to induce concentration of the mind. Just as the mind is focused easily in crystal-gazing, so also the mind attains one-pointedness, when it looks at the Linga. That is the reason why the ancient Rishis and the seers of India have prescribed Linga for being installed in the temples of Lord Shiva.[12]

The great warrior Arjuna in epic Mahabharatha worshipped Linga for acquiring Pashupatasthra, great vedic scholar Ravana in epic Ramayana worshipped Shiva to present his mother Atmalinga, legendary rishi Markandeya and numerous rishis spread across timezones have worshipped the simplest looking Linga. Rishis used to leave all materialism to attain spirituality and a lump of soil in forest was what was required to worship and meditate. Scientifically from Lingayatism or Veerashaivism it helps one relate to cosmic energy through meditation of Istalinga worshipped by keeping it on palm.[13]

A lingam at Amarnath in the western Himalayas forms every winter from ice dripping on the floor of a cave and freezing like a stalagmite. It is very popular with pilgrims.

There is a great connection in marking the forces of nature to be worshipped. The following description has various forms of nature being worshipped as Linga.

The Vedas speak of the Ashta Murthys’ (forms) of Lord Shiva. Sarva, Bhava, Rudra, Ugra, Bheema, Pasupathi, Mahadeva, Eashana are the eight Murthys of Shiva. Puranas explain the Adhistanas for these eight forms, which are Sarva for earth, Bhava for water, Rudra for fire, Ugra for wind, Bheema for space, Pasupathi for yajamana, Mahadeva for moon and Eashana for Sun. Shiva is also called Pasupathi i.e. Lord Shiva with his enormous grace on the Jeeva means pasu, cuts the Pasa or the string and makes it move free to join him with devotion. In this way, his name Pasupathi is more meaningful. Each of the following Kshethras (places) in India & Nepal connected to the Lord ’s eight forms, so that the devotee can know clearly how the ancient puranas took care to locate these places both geographically and spiritually. Shiva, Brahma puranas are the main sources .

The following forms or forces of nature are worshipped in their primal form only without any special idols representing them.

Sarva :- Bhoomi Linga, Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu. It is in Shiva Kanchi Kshetra, where the Lord is in the form of Kshiti Linga in the Ekamra tree ( Aamra ( Mango in Sankrit) tree, which yield only one fruit per year). Parvathi worshipped this form first. There is no Abhisheka done with water at this shrine, jasmine oil is used instead. The Devi’s name here is Kamakshi. All the desires of the devotees are fulfilled with her gracious eyes.
Bhava :- Jala Linga, Tiruvanaikoil, (Jambukeswaram), Tamil Nadu. This temple is located on the outskirts of Trichy, where Lord Jambukeswara is seated and showers all his blessings to his devotees. This Kshethra is called Jambhukeswara Kshetra, also known as Jala Linga. The devotees can see from the outside of Garbha Gruha the water bubbles coming out from Panipetham. There is a Jambu tree, which is very old and very big. The legends say Lord Shiva wanted to stay here along with the Jambu tree. So the devotees treat this tree as sacred as the Lord.
Rudra:- Agni or Thejo (Divine Light) Linga, Tiruvannamalai, Tamilnadu – Arunachaleswara. In Tiruvannamalai, Lord Shiva is seated in the form of Thejolinga. The whole mountain appears to be a Linga. As a result of Parvathi’s great penance, a sharp spark of fire came from Arunachala and took shape as Arunalinga.
Ugra:- Vayu Linga, Sri Kalahasti, Andhra Pradesh. The Sri Kalahasteeswara temple is situated on the banks of Swarna Mukhi River in Sri Kalahasti. Spiritually elevated souls only can see that there is a strong wind blowing around the Linga. Bhakta Kannappa story is connected to this temple. Even animals got salvation by worshipping this Lord. Three animals – Cobweb (Sree), Kala (snake), Hasthi (elephant) prayed to God with utmost faith and devotion and attained Moksha. One can see the symbols there on the Shiva Linga even today
Bheema:- Akasha Linga, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. This Kshetra is on the banks of Cauvery. We don’t see any Murthy in the temple Garbha Gruha. The puranas speak of this Kshetra very highly. No one can see the Lord’s Murthy, except the highest spiritual souls. There is a space in the Garbha Gruha and many Abharanas are decorated and the devotees assume the God is seated there. A very beautiful Nataraja murthy is in outer Garbha Gruha for worship and for the satisfaction of the devotees.
Pasupathi:- Yajamana(Lord) Linga, Kathmandu, Nepal. In Nepal, Pasupathinadha Kshetra is famous and the Lord here is in human form. The devotee can see the God up to his waist only. The Murthy is decorated with Gold Kavacha always. Nobody can enter into the Garbha Gruha except the Archaka (not even the King of Nepal). Many devotees from all over the globe pray to this Lord with highest devotion and get their wishes fulfilled.
Mahadeva:- Chandra Linga, West Bengal. Chandra natha Linga is situated in West Bengal 34 miles away from Chatagav City. Many sacred thirthas surround this Kshetra. Devi purana lauded this Kshethra greatly.
Eashana:- Surya Linga, Konark Temple, Orissa. This Kshetra is in Orissa state near Puri Jagannath Kshetra. Konark is now in ruins and the temple is in fragments and now, devotees can’t see any God or Goddess here. The legend says that Sri Krishna’s son Samba suffered once from leprosy and was cured by worshipping the Sun God and the Linga here and since then this Kshetra became a remedy center for all diseases. Even in these days the worship is going on with same faith and devotion.
The Bijileshwar Mahadev[14](incidence of Vasishta in Rigveda) absorbs lightening and breaks into pieces, is then restored by butter every 12 years.

Shivling (6543m) is also a mountain in Uttarakhand (the Garwhal region of Himalayas). It arises as a sheer pyramid above the snout of the Gangotri Glacier. The mountain resembles a shivling when viewed from certain angles, especially when travelling or trekking from Gangotri to Gomukh as a part of a traditional Hindu pilgrimage.

Nandi The Holy Bull

Bull Temple was constructed in 16th century and is dedicated to a sacred bull – Nandi carved out of a single granite block. The temple is a typical specimen of Dravidian architecture. Kallekai parse an annual festival is celebrated at the time of harvesting of peanuts during the month of Nov-Dec, thousands of visitors throng the city to participate in the festival from all over the state.

¤ About The Bull Temple

The “Bull Temple” is situated in Bangalore – the capital of Karnataka. The sculpture of bull is the holy deity in the temple, also known as “Nandi Temple”. The gigantic bull measuring 4.57m in height and 6.10 m in length is carved out of a single rock. It is a sculptural magnum opus.
This Bull Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s Vahana (vehicle), Nandi the bull. Large number of devotees visits the enormous monolithic statue of the sitting bull every day.

Nandi the bull of Shiva faces the temple of Lord Shiva haunch at the back with sculptures of God Surya and Goddess Candra on their chariots drawn by horses. There is a small Lingam shrine bedecked with the exquisite Gopuram. The underground “Sri-Gavi Gandadhareshwara Temple” holds its own charm, every year on 14th January known as Makara Sankranti festival, it is believed that a ray of light passes between the horn of a Nandi outside the temple and lights the idol kept inside. The Bull temple is full of liveliness during the Shivratri festival.

Non Hindus are not allowed in the temple. There are continuos festive celebrations throughout the year assisted by the musical programs held in the temple premises.

Timings: Entry to the temple is free and the daily timings are from 6a.m. to 8 p.m.

¤ Legend

The legend has it that the surrounding area of the temple, known as Sunkenahalli was cultivated for groundnut. A bull started grazing in the well-grown groundnut crop, at this, a farmer got furious and hit the bull with a club. Immediately the bull sat down becoming motionless and was transformed into a stone. Poor farmers were left stun and felt guilty. For their repentance they decided to build a temple for the bull, to their surprise the bull was growing in height. The worried farmer then prayed to Lord Shiva who advised them to redeem a trident buried a few feet away from the bull and place the trident on the forehead of the stone statue to stop it from growing. Farmers followed the Lord’s advice and the bull stopped growing. Still one can see the trident place on bull’s forehead.

Since then farmers offer their first crop of groundnut to the bull. The farmer’s hold a Groundnut fair known as Kadalekayi Parishe, near the temple premises every year, to show their thankfulness. It is one of the worth visiting places in Bangalore.

¤ Architecture

The temple is a typical specimen of the Dravidian-style of temple architecture constructed by Kempe Gowda. The temple is nestling in Basavanagudi housing a scared bull of Lord Shiva, it is believed that the source of the river Vishwa Bharathi originates from the feet of the Nandi. There is a Ganesh temple inside the premises with a large deity all made of 110 kilos of butter. The deity of butter is distributed as a prashada (God’s food) every four years.

Farmers offer the first groundnuts to the sacred bull. The Bhoganandiswara temple at the foothills of Nandi Hills goes back to the period of the Banas, Cholas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagar Kings. The image has been carved out of single granite rock. The original color of Nandi bull was gray which has now turned black due to the application of coconut oil by the devotees.

¤ Festivity

Anually, Kadalekayi Parishe -the Groundnut Fair is held near the temple during the month of November- December when the groundnut crop is harvested. Farmers offer the first groundnuts harvest to the sacred bull. Thousand of visitors and devotees throng the temple site from all over the state.

¤ Accessibility To The Bull Temple

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus regularly operates from the all over the state to the Park. Coaches of B.T.S., I.T.D.C., are also available. Tourist coaches and taxis are also available for the park.

An important and tragic event took place on the tenth of Muharram that shook the Muslim world. It was the murder of Imam Husain (A.S.), his family members, and his close friends by the army of Yazid. Yazid was at that time the despotic ruler of the Muslim world, who came to power as the self-proclaimed “sixth caliph of Islam” after the death of his father, Mu’awiya. Yazid gave himself the title of ameer-ul-mu’mineen, meaning “commander of the faithful.” Husain was one of the two grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W.), and the younger of the two sons of Hazrat Fatima (A.S.), the daughter of the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet loved his two grandsons, Hasan and Husain, dearly, and since he had no surviving sons of his own, he used to call them his “sons,” out of affection. There are numerous traditions, recorded by many historians, which indicate the great love and respect the Holy Prophet had for his grandsons. According to one tradition, the Holy Prophet declared that Hasan and Husain were the “Princes of the Youth of Paradise.” Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W.) took his grandsons with him, along with his daughter Fatima and son-in-law Imam ‘Ali (A.S.), to face the challenge of the Christian delegation from Najrain, which had come to dispute with the Holy Prophet about his divine mission. The Christians were awe-struck at the sight of the Holy Prophet and his family, and withdrew the challenge. This event became known as Mubahila, and is recorded in the Holy Qur’an in chapter 3 verse 61. Historical Background During the caliphate of Imam ‘Ali, Mu’awiya declared himself the governor of Syria. After the assassination of ‘Ali by a Kharijite, ‘Ali’s elder son, Imam Hasan, succeeded him, being judged as the most qualified and deserving by the people. By this time, however, Mu’awiya had amassed enough support in and around Syria to unilaterally declare himself caliph of whole Islamic world. In order to avoid bloodshed, preserve unity, and in fact to save the religion of Islam from destruction, Imam Hasan signed a peace treaty with Mu’awiya. The treaty included these terms: (1) Mu’awiya would be the temporal political head of the Muslim empire; (2) Mu’awiya would not appoint his own successor, but would leave the caliphate to the will of the majority (which favored Imam Husain); and, (3) Mu’awiya would allow the Muslims to live in peace, free from oppression, especially those belonging to the Hashimite tribe (the tribe of the Holy Prophet and his family). Mu’awiya violated the terms of this treaty and, near his death, designated his son Yazid as his successor. Yazid was an immoral and ruthless man with no sense of justice. He employed bribery and coercion to win support. Imam Husain, as the protector and guardian of the religion established by his noble grandfather, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W.), refused to swear allegiance to him. Yazid realized that he could never legitimize and consolidate his rule without the allegiance of Imam Husain, the grandson of the Holy Prophet. Consequently, he decided that he would either force the Imam to submit to his rule, or else he would have him killed. In the 61st year after Hijra (680 AD), Imam Husain, while performing the pilgrimage in Mecca, received the news that assassins had been sent by Yazid to kill him. Desiring to protect the sanctity of the Holy City, he interrupted his pilgrimage and headed towards Kufa, in modern-day Iraq on invitation of the people there to come and teach them about Islam. He took with him his family members and close friends, including his six-month-old infant son, Ali Asghar. His journey to Kufa was intercepted by a detachment of Yazid’s army, led by a commander named Hur. Hur had orders to re-direct the Imam to camp in the desert plains of Karbala, on the banks of the River Euphrates. In order to avoid bloodshed, Imam Husain chose not to resist, and followed Hur’s directions. He and his companions were forced to camp at a great distance from the river, which was the only source of water in the area. On the seventh day of Muharram, Ibn Ziyad, the governor of Kufa, ordered that food and water supplies were to be blocked from reaching Imam Husain’s camp. In the meantime, the ranks of Yazid’s army were increasing by the thousands. The blistering sun scorched the desert sand, and the thirst was becoming unbearable in Husain’s camp. The children especially were becoming dehydrated and weak, and Imam Husain pleaded with Yazid’s army to supply water at least to those children, but to no avail. On the tenth day of Muharram, Yazid’s army was ready to attack the small band of defenders in Imam Husain’s camp. One by one, his friends and relatives took permission to go out and fight and each one laid down his life in the defense of Islam. Two of his nephews, who were only ten years old, were among the brave soldiers who died fighting. The commander of Husain’s forces was Abbas, his brother, who had inherited his chivalry from his father ‘Ali, the Lion of Allah. Abbas asked Husain’s permission to go and fight his way through to the river and bring back some water for Sakina, Husain’s four-year-old daughter, and the other children. The Imam reluctantly gave him permission to go and fetch water. Abbas took an empty flask, charged into Yazid’s army, cut through the ranks, and arrived at the river. While he filled the pitcher with water, he himself did not drink a drop, for he reasoned that he could not do so while Imam Husain, Sakina, and the others were still thirsty. Abbas did not make it back to the camp, however. The whole army of Yazid converged upon him. He died defending the precious pitcher of water. Imam Husain’s six-month-old son, Ali Asghar, was on the verge of death from dehydration. Husain brought him out of the tent to show his pitiful condition to the soldiers in Yazid’s army, pleading for at least enough water to save the infant’s life. The enemy denied his request. A heartless archer from the enemy army shot an arrow that struck the infant, killing him in his father’s own arms. Soon, Imam Husain was left alone to face Yazid’s army, since all the able-bodied male members of his camp had died fighting one by one. He made a final plea to the army of Yazid, reminding them of his kinship with the Holy Prophet of Islam, the love and respect which the Holy Prophet had used to show him, and the numerous traditions in which the Holy Prophet had warned the Muslims not to disobey or injure him. He reminded them of his desire to uphold the truth and his status as one of the true protectors of the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet. He asked to be allowed to leave the Muslim kingdom, so that Yazid would not perceive him as a threat to his power. Finally, he clearly warned them that by shedding his blood, they would be subjected to the wrath of Allah (S.W.T.) and they would lose any hope of the intercession of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W.). The commanders of the opposing army were unmoved, and reiterated their desire to kill Imam Husain unless he chose to submit to the authority of Yazid. Husain was left with no choice but to take a firm and final stand against falsehood, and to fight for the preservation of Islam. He fought bravely, and in the end he achieved martyrdom. The Significance of Imam Husain’s Martyrdom Immediate outcome of Imam Husain’s actions: Muslims and non-Muslims alike have acknowledged that Imam Husain saved Islam from destruction by sacrificing his life. Yazid had been successful in winning over the allegiance of the great majority of Muslims, and the rest of the Muslim world was in a state of moral slumber. The principles of Islam were being plundered, the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet was being tampered with, and phony traditions were being concocted to justify the rule of Yazid. It was the singular sacrifice of Imam Husain and his faithful followers that shook the Islamic world out of its slumber. The Muslims were forced to ask themselves why the beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet had been murdered so brutally. It then dawned upon the people what the true nature of Yazid and his supporters was. Long term outcome of Imam Husain’s actions: Imam Husain, by challenging Yazid and in the process laying down his life, changed the world and re-shaped human destiny forever. Yazid, and indeed all future despots, were put on notice that they would not be tolerated, and that truth and justice would be upheld and would ultimately succeed, regardless of the costs. The Iranian revolution that uprooted and overthrew an unjust government, and the liberation of Lebanon from foreign occupation are two of the more recent exemplars of these principles laid down by Imam Husain. Imam Husain’s Philosophy: Professor Syed Jafar Raza Bilgirami beautifully describes Imam Husain’s philosophy. He states that at Karbala, Imam Husain came to rebuild a system of life. He gave a practical embodiment to the rational concept of justice. He successfully placed the spirit (savage, war-making qualities in man) and the appetite (greed for material things and lust for power) under the command of reason (‘Aql). In Karbala, he formulated a new code of life to safeguard the peace and security of human society for all times to come. Imam Husain’s Foresight and Planning for the Battle of Karbala: Imam Husain chose not to flee or hide from Yazid, because that would not have exposed Yazid’s corruption of Islam and would have served to legitimize his unjust rule. He knew that by rejecting Yazid’s demands, he would most likely be killed. However, he also did not want to die like any other martyr. He wanted his death to serve as a starting point for a revolution that would strengthen justice and oppose tyranny for all times to come. This type of stance needed planning and wisdom. As pointed out by scholars, Imam Husain’s planning encompassed three factors: 1. The choice of location; 2. The choice of companions; and, 3. Foolproof arrangements for passing on the event to the annals of history. The Choice of Location: Imam Husain chose not to stay in Mecca because he did not want his blood to desecrate the Holy Precincts. Besides, if he were to be killed by hired assassins, then the killers’ motives would not be clear and his death would fade away on the pages of history. So he chose to travel to Iraq (the den of the tyrant himself), where his mission would receive the maximum publicity, and where Yazid’s evil would be best exposed. The events of history proved that Imam Husain was right. The Choice of Companions: Hujjatul-Islam Maulana Ali Naqvi has written that in Karbala, the largest number of true Muslims gathered in the entire history of Islam. Imam Husain was not seeking the best fighters, since his goal was not to fight to win a physical war. He was looking for men of principle, true Muslims, firm and patient, who would go through the utmost hardships successfully. His companions included men of different tribes, coming from different parts of Arabia and beyond. They included, among others, an elderly companion of the Holy Prophet, some liberated slaves, and a young newlywed Christian couple. The age of his supporters ranged from six months to a ripe old age of over 90. The heterogeneity of Imam Husain’s supporting group indicates that he did not want the confrontation with Yazid to be misrepresented as a struggle between two clans, or a campaign for gaining power. Preserving His Sacrifice in the Annals of History: Imam Husain took women, children, and all of his family members with him. This strategy ensured that after his death, his message would be spread through his family members, and that Yazid would not be able to suppress the truth or falsify Imam Husain’s motives. History proves that it was a brilliant move. His sister Zainab (A.S.), through her scholarly and bold speeches, and with no fear of the tyrant Yazid, eloquently proclaimed the truth and exposed the falsehood of Yazid in his own court. He was speechless and humiliated before her. His court was full of dignitaries, both local and from other nation-states, and his own supporters. They were shocked to hear the truth put forth so forcefully, and many were brought to tears. The same scene was repeated in the bazaars and marketplaces of the country, all along the travel route of the surviving captives. Husain had laid the foundation of the revolution with his blood. His sister Zainab stirred the revolution with her oratory. That revolution changed the world forever. Statements of Historians and World Leaders: This unique historical sacrifice of Imam Husain and his small band of 71 male supporters has caught the attention of historians, scholars, and writers throughout the world, in all periods of history. Some of the more notable quotes and insights are given below: “Of that gallant band, male and female knew that the enemy forces around were implacable, and were not only ready to fight, but to kill. Denied even water for the children, they remained parched under the burning sun and scorching sands, yet not one faltered for a moment. Husain marched with his little company, not to glory, not to power of wealth, but to a supreme sacrifice, and every member bravely faced the greatest odds without flinching.” – Dr. K. Sheldrake “If Husain had fought to quench his worldly desires, as alleged by certain Christian critics, then I do not understand why his sister, wife, and children accompanied him. It stands to reason therefore, that he sacrificed purely for Islam.” – Charles Dickens “The best lesson which we get from the tragedy of Cerebella is that Husain and his companions were rigid believers in God. They illustrated that the numerical superiority does not count when it comes to the truth and the falsehood. The victory of Husain, despite his minority, marvels me!” – Thomas Carlyle “In a distant age and climate, the tragic scene of the death of Husain will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader.” – Edward Gibbon “The tragedy of Karbala decided not only the fate of the Caliphate, but also of Mohammadan kingdoms long after the Caliphate had waned and disappeared.” – William Muir “Imam Husain uprooted despotism forever, till the Day of Resurrection. He watered the dry gardens of freedom with a surging wave of his blood, and indeed he awakened the sleeping Muslim nation. What is Ashura ? In the month of Muharram 61 AH (approx. 20 October 680 AD), an event took place in Iraq at a place known as Kerbala on the bank of the river Euphrates. It seemed in those days insignificant from the historical point of view. A large army which had been mobilised by the Umayyad regime besieged a group of persons numbering less than a hundred and put them under pressure to pay allegiance to the Caliph of the time and submit to his authority. The small group resisted and a severe battle took place in which they were all martyred. It appeared at that time that like hundreds of similar events, this battle would be recorded in history and forgotten in time. However, the events that occurred on the 10th day of Muharram in Kerbala were to become a beacon and an inspiration for future generations. In this article, we shall examine briefly the principal adversaries. Who is Hussain (A)? The leader of the small band of men who were martyred in Kerbala was none other than Hussain (A), son of Ali bin Abi Talib (A)and grandson of the Holy Prophet (S). Who was Hussain(A)? He was the son of Fatima (A) for whom the Holy Prophet (S) said, “Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain. May God love whoever loves Hussain.”[ref:1] With the passing away of his brother Hassan (A) in 50 AH, Hussain (A) became the leader of the household of the Holy Prophet (S). He respected the agreement of peace signed by Hassan (A) and Muawiya, and, despite the urging of his followers, he did not undertake any activity that threatened the political status quo.Rather he continued with the responsibility of looking after the religious needs of the people and was recognised for his knowledge, piety and generosity. An example of the depth of his perception can be seen in his beautiful du’a on the day of Arafat, wherein he begins by explaining the the qualities of Allah, saying: ” (Oh Allah) How could an argument be given about Your Existence by a being whose total and complete existence is in need of you? When did you ever disappear so that you might need an evidence and logic to lead (the people) towards You? And when did You ever become away and distant so that your signs and effects made the people get in touch with you? Blind be the eye which does not see You (whereas) You are observing him. What did the one who missed You find? And what does the one who finds You lack? Certainly, the one who got pleased and inclined toward other than You, came to nothingness (failed).” On the other hand, we have Yazid, whose father (Muawiya) and grandfather (Abu Sufyan – the arch-enemy of the Prophet) had always tried to sabotage the mission of the Holy Prophet, and who showed his true colour by stating in a poem, “Bani Hashim had staged a play to obtain kingdom, there was neither any news from God nor any revelation.”[ref:2] Mas’udi writes that Yazid was a pleasure-seeking person, given to wine drinking and playing with pets. It is no wonder that Husain’s response to Yazid’s governor, when asked to pay allegiance to Yazid was, “We are the household of the prophethood, the source of messengership, the descending-place of the angels, through us Allah had began (showering His favours) and with us He has perfected (His favours), whereas Yazid is a sinful person, a drunkard, the killer of innocent people and one who openly indulges in sinful acts. A person like me can never pledge allegiance to a person like him …” [ref:3] The revolution of Hussain (A) was an Islamic movement spearheaded by one of the great leaders of Islam. The principles and laws of Islam demanded that Hussain (A) act to warn the Ummah of the evil situation which it was in, and to stand in the way of the deviating ruler. As Hussain (A) himself remarked when he left Madina for the last time, “I am not rising (against Yazid) as an insolent or an arrogant person, or a mischief-monger or tyrant. I have risen (against Yazid) as I seek to reform the Ummah of my grandfather. I wish to bid the good and forbid the evil.”[ref:4] Why remember Ashura ? Why is Hussain (A) regarded as the “leader of the martyrs” ? It is because he was not just the victim of an ambitious ruler. There is no doubt that the tragedy of Kerbala, when ascribed to the killers, is a criminal and terrible act. However when ascribed to Hussain (A) himself, it represents a conscious confrontation and a courageous resistance for a sacred cause. The whole nation had failed to stand up to Yazid. They had succumbed to his will, and deviation and regression towards the pre-Islamic ways were increasing. Passiveness by Hussain (A) in this situation would have meant the end of Islam as we know it. Thus Hussain (A) took upon himself the responsibility of the whole nation. The greatest tragedy was that one who stood up for the noblest of causes, the defence of Islam, was cut down in so cruel a manner. It is for this reason that the sacrifice of Hussain (A) is commemorated annually throughout the Muslim world. Our sorrow never abates as we relive the tragedy. As Allama Iqbal says in his Baqiyat (in Urdu): Ronay wala hoon Shaheed-e-Kerbala key gham men main, Kya durey maqsad na dengey Saqiye Kausar mujhey I am one who weeps at the plight of the Martyr of Kerbala Won’t the reward be given to me by the Keeper of Kauser (Imam Ali (A)) The commemoration of Ashura on the 10th of Muharram every year serves to remind us of the sacrifices of the family of the Prophet (S). It also makes us aware of the people, then and now, who tried to destroy Islam and the family of the Prophet (S) and all that they stood for – as well as those who watched, listened and did nothing. s

Healing Hands

At Karbala Talkatora maybe a distance of an hour and half from Nakhas, slowed down by a snail pace of the processionist, the street matams, the noha recitals on the way, with the Ashura fast called Faqa , kept by the Shias, so the heat, no water , no food just plain blood letting of pain.The Tears the Sweat, the Awesomeness of a Day called Ashura all of Lucknow converges here.On the other side the movement of the house Tazias, makes its way also towards Karbala Talkatora.

Inside the ancestral grave yard is a huge gigantic banyan tree , amazonian girth, children have found seats here in the hollows as the watch the juloos.
After the ziyarth at Imam Hussains Roza, people sart moving, or wait till the breaking of the Fqaq here, I left much before due to dehyderation, as I was fasting too.
There was a camp on one side young doctors interns changingbandagesm cleaning deep wound, stitching the badly opened ones, this was a moment of selfless healing of faith.
The docs were tired , but did not complain, there was no smile on their faces, but they kept on working , meticulously.

Barely has Madam Mayawatiji taken the reins of Uttar Pradesh, lawlessness has begun to raise its head, unfearful of the code of human conduct, unfearful of the law and order.
Yesterday a guy was stripped in the Agra court premises by truant lawyers, beaten head tonsured , made to fall at the lawyers feet, this tamasha was broadcasted on TV networks , not a single Khaki cop in sight.Such images , shame our country, stringent laws should be passed on people who take the law in their hand, whether they be lawyers or lathi wielding mind crazy cops.I mean what does the Honorable President of our country , see when he switches on his telivision, or the Honorable Prime Ministerji, what are his feelings of disgust as the pilot of this ship watches such image, I still dont know what late Narsihmajis feelings when brick by brick the Babri Masjid came tumbling down this was impotency of a democratic elected by the people syndrome , or what do other people in high places, law makers eminent Supreme Court judges feel, the way we are falling in our values, our hate, the moral brigade a parallel system of travesty of justice.
I can still not forget images of the lathi carnage on women in Chattisgarh, or the kicking of an old man , helpless, this the butchery of a system, mocking everything our forefathers fought and gave their life for.
All this will soon be forgotten with a new batch of spell binding news.
Have news will travel faster than the speed of sound.

Healing the Wounds of Faith

I spoke to Dr Shabeeb Rizvi Shia Islamic scholar on my mobile , it was his Sms to me on Bibi Fatima that inspired me to write the two articles on her trial and tribulations, sometimes being the daughter of the Holy Prophet , is a huge mantle of a spiritual responsibility, people around you human as ever, the envy, the underlayers of Hate for the House Of Bani Hashim, enemies encircling you, as Hazrat Ali ,it is an undeniable fact had cut short many a life of the various tribes of Arabia.This was an act, that had the repercussion seen on the battlefield of Karbala, revenge, honor killings , was the Arab pastime.Ferocious inter rivalry, an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth, the early Arabs of the era of Janabe Sayyada were barbaric, became more barbaric when Imam Hussains caravan reached Karbala.
Imagine walking up to a head bowed in prayer , a head that belonged to the Holy Prophets cousin , his son in law , severing it, the blood stains on the walls of Islam, the ensuing justification, that it was political.Sometimes I think in earlier Islam , it was more Politics than belief in Allah.Its the same today.With money the powerful scons of Yazidiyat have bought over people to their side, the deaths continue, the dissemination of Hate through Madarssas , run by rogue Mullahs.Conversions to the Army of warlord soldiers, vandals, destroying all that took centuries to build.Today the chickens have come home to roost, the winds of the past are rocking away kingdoms of the East, kingdoms standing on whithering sand.
I do not say Shiasm is good or Sunnism is bad, I say Islam is the greater good, we have to heal raw wounds, we die in all calamities not as Sunnis or Shias but as Muslims.Today unfortunately the crusades is fought within our own kind, sectarian hate , factionalism, is this the Heritage of the Message of the Holy Prophet that we leave as Islamic Inheritance to our posterity.?
It is maddening to see the unnecessary killing, the tears, the bloodshed, young lives destroyed as the first step landed on a Mine..hope of a future blown to smithereens.
Well these pictures were shot on Ashura day, at Karbala Talkatora, young interns from nearby Government Hospitals giving a healing hand to wounds of faith.Pictures that got lost due to faulty focussing I tweaked with a paint brush, to let them live as pictorial poetry.

Killing still continues in Iraq and the condition is going from bad to worse. But the Bush administration not looking into changing its Iraq policy. The present situation reveals that if there is no immediate change in the US policy on Iraq, then by 2007 the probability of outburst or civil war will definitely have increased.

Another place the Hijdas throng in large numbers is at the Urus of the Saint of Haji Malang near Kalyan close to Mumbai. This picture was taken at Haji Malang, it was here I decided to write about Hijdas, post their lives through my pictures.For me the Hijdas is not about alternate sexuality,it is a very imporant human factor, they have to be treated as Humans.They deserve a better deal.These Hijdas are fiercely private, gifted, some more wealthy than an industrialist or news baron. The eunuch is a born child with defective genitalia given to the Hijdas, like Mona the Eunuch child. I am a hetro sexual male, no confusion about my sexual orientation, but I am a disciple of Laxmi Narayan Tripathi , my metrosexual net savvy Guru. The Human Body a Camera

I am haunted by his eyes in this picture, normally with your eyes you see an image , block it away , but as a photojournalist, it gets embedded in your minds camera consciousness.No sepia toned fading as in momochromes,this stays in color, the color red the color of blood. I remember in my early years as photographer 6 years back I shot a Naga Sadhu dead at Vasai Fort, they had discovered his body, after two or three days, he was stark naked, maggots had eaten his hand, the stench was awful, the superstitious fear all kept , the people away, I shot the picture, vomitting after each frame, I shot black and white neg, I still feel the stench of death.. This is picture taking where the picture becomes larger than the life one shot.. The camera is a primal life force, the human body is a camera , analogue digital call it what you may..little thumbnails stuck to our memories releasing lost happiness and the freshness of undying pain. Through the viewfinder of the mind ones sees the lost World and a New World we try to reach out to, in the receeding horizons of uncherished hope.

Qaeda warns of attacks worse than 9/11..some excerpts from the article.

This erstwhile mother worked on the grinding stone, this lady devout, humble, the daughter of the richest woman on the Arabian Pnninsular Bibi Khadija.
She suffered on the passing away of the Messenger of God, deprived of her personal inheritance, ill treated by a political Islam, she stood her ground.Already aware of the hardships to come, hardships on her children, on Islam.But she led from the front, it is her values, that she instilled in her children, that saved Islam from Islam.
Martyrdom is an inalienable spiritual right of Inheritance..
Karbala was the battleground of Faith that stood against a powerful Yazidi force, each one slaughtered, Arab cruelty at its worst, death you would not wish for your worst nemy , such a death was meted out to the kith and kin of the Holy Prophet , this is not a melodrama or Majlis rhetoric, this is Truth, that for 1400 years the people have ignored chosen to erase Karbala…but Karbala is imprinted on every Shia heart..The Shia mother is the soul of our Shiasm who keeps our faith alive.Maksade Fatima for a Maksade Hussain.
It is Azadari E Hussain , that is a Shia mothers Motherhood that she passes onto us her children..yes I am crying this is in rememberance of my dead Mother , she made me a better Shia than a Shia hardliner.

Wife and my daughter, my daughter in law have been attending 5 days ladies majlis at Shia Mehfil at Bandra Bazar Road.

Third Infallible Fatima (SA), daughter of the Holy Prophet (SAW)

The Prophet of Islam had only one daughter named Fatima. Her mother Khadija had two other daughters from her two earlier marriages. When The Prophet married her, both daughters came with her mother to live in the house of the Prophet. Hazrat Fatima (SA) was born five years after Besath (Declaration of Prophet hood) when Muhammad (SAW) was about 45 years old and her mother Khadija was about 55 years old. The Date of her birth was 20th Jumada al-Akhar. She has many following titles.

Al-Siddiqah (The Honest One)
Al-Mubarakah (The Blessed One)
At-Taherah (The Virtuous)
Az-Zakiyah (The Chaste)
Ar-Radhiah (The Satisfied or Gratified One)
Al-Mardhiah (Who well-pleases Allah)
Az-Zahra (The Splendid One/ Lady of Light)
Al-Batoul (The Chaste and Pure One)
Al-Adhra (The Virgin or the Chaste)
Al-Muhaddathah (Who spoken by Angels)
Syedatun Nisa al-Alamin (Leader of the women of the worlds)
After the death of her mother Khadija, she looked after her father the Prophet of Islam so devoutly that Muhammad (SAW) used to call her “Umm-e-Abiha”, i.e. the mother her father. This was the hardest time for the family because in the same year Abu Talib who was the protector of Muhammad (SAW) from the animosity of the Quraish also died in the same year as Khadija. Muhammad (SAW) married Umm-e-Salama, an old widow after the death of Khadija to have someone to look after the household chores. When Umm-e-Salama was requested to tutor the child Fatima (SA), the wise woman replied “How can I tutor one who is the personification of high virtues and purity. It is I who should learn from her.” Her childhood, therefore, was passed in a very chaste and modest environment. It was then that she saw her revered father preaching Islam in the most hostile atmosphere. The hostility of the Quraish after the death of Abu Talib and Khadija was the strongest. Fatima saw and dressed the wounds sustained by her father due to the stones thrown on him by the non-believers. She might have heard and seen that certain wretched women hurled rubbish on her noble father. She might have learnt of the plans made to put an end to her father’s life. But from all these things Fatima was neither frightened nor disheartened. She comforted her father, tended to his wounds even at that tender age. The entire family was blanketed with clouds of sorrowful gas a result of the almost daily humiliation and mockery to which her most revered father was subjected.

Migration

When the migration took place, Fatima was left in Makka with the rest of the family which included her step mother Umm-e-Salama, Ali’s (AS) mother Fatima binte Asad and many others. Ali (AS) was in charge of the family. He stayed in Makka for another 3 days to give back the deposits to the Makkans who entrusted these to the Prophet for safe keeping. After fulfilling this duty Ali (AS) brought the family to Madina.

Marriage

After one years stay in Madina when Fatima(SA) was about 10 years old that proposals for marriage began to be received by the Prophet who politely refused to accept by simply saying that it is in the hands of Allah, that he was awaiting Allah’s decree in this matter.

Fatima (SA) was the model of Prophet’s teaching among women just as Ali (AS) was the best embodiment of his instructions and manly qualities among men. They were the most suitable couple to be married. But Ali (AS) was too modest to speak about it. After some persuasion from friends he finally went to see the Prophet in the mosque and proposed for marriage. Prophet told Fatima about it and asked her whether she would approve. After receiving her consent the marriage of Fatima (SA) and Ali (AS) took place in the simplest possible manner. Ali (AS) sold his shield of amour for 200 Dirhams, brought the money to the Holy Prophet (SAW) who added a similar amount and asked his companions to buy household goods to set up home for the Holy Family. Marriage was solemnized by the Prophet himself and after marriage the couple went to live in a separate house next to the House of the Prophet around the Mosque.

Children

Hassan (AS) was born in the 3rd year of Hijra, Hussain (AS) was born in the 4th year of Hijra, Zainab was born in the 6th year of Hijra, Umm-e-Kulsoom was born in the 7th year of Hijra.

It was in the same house that the famous Verse of Purification (Sura 33.Verse 33) was revealed on the Holy Prophet and its narration by Fatima has become so famous that it is read in every Muslim house as Hadith-e-Kisa. The Reading of this Hadith brings blessings to the household. (Tafseer-e-Kabir by Al-Razi)

It was in the same house where this blessed family fasted for three days continuously without eating any food giving away their Iftari to a beggar, an orphan and a prisoner who arrived at their door and asked for food. The Verse in Sura Dahr revealed in praise of their extremely charitable act in the way of Allah.

It was in the same house where every morning the Holy Prophet stood outside and said loudly “Assalamo Alaikum Ya Ahlebaitin Nubuwwah” Peace and blessings on the people of the Household of the Nabi.

There was so much respect in the heart of the Holy Prophet for Fatima (SA) that whenever Fatima (SA) arrived in the mosque of the Prophet, the Holy Prophet (SAW) stood up to respect her. This gesture was also to show the companions respect for women generally which was lacking in the Arabian society of the day.

These acts of the Prophet (SAW) were to show the companions that this house and its occupants have a special place in the way of Allah and that this status should be maintained after the death of the Prophet (SAW). Unfortunately this was not done as the Holy Prophet (SAW) intended his companions to do. History tells us some very sad moments connected with this house.

After the death of the Prophet when Ali (AS) did not come out to give his oath of allegiance to Abu Bakr, the door of the house was burnt down to get him out and in the process Fatima (SA) was injured. Her 5th unborn child (Mohsin) died because of this harsh action of some of the companions and she herself died within 3 months of the death of her Holy Father.

The following lines of poetry show her ordeal after the death of her holy father very clearly.

“After the death of my father my sufferings were so great that if such hardships fell upon days, the days would turn into nights.”

Fatima (SA) was a symbol of womanhood in Islam. How a daughter, a wife and a mother should behave in their ordinary lives. She was devoted to her father, looked after him when he was in distress by the hands of the non-believers of Makka, she was the exemplary wife, queen of her household yet fair to her maid servant Fizza to divide household chores between herself and the maid servant, she was a devout wife and the most loving mother to her children.

There were occasions when there was no food for the family, but she would never complain. Once Ali (AS) went out to do some work to get food for the family but returned empty handed. Fatima asked Ali (AS) what happened to the food. Ali (AS) said that he did earn some money and bought food, but while on his way home he met some poor hungry persons and gave away all the food to them. When the Prophet heard of this situation he brought some food for the family and told them that Ali’s charitable act was of the greatest value in the eyes of Allah.

The whole family was thankful to Allah and there were no complaints against anyone.

She would go to the mosque of the Prophet to participate in the prayers with all the ladies; she would go out in the battlefield to tend the wounded. In the battle of Ohud, when her father was injured she tended him, cleaned his wounds, put some burnt wool on the wounds to stop blood flowing. When the Holy Prophet (SAW) recovered, he thanked her for her great work in the battlefield.

Death of Hazrat Fatima (SA)

On 3rd of the month of Jumada al-Thani Hazrat Fatima (SA) died. This was about 90 days after the death of her Holy Father. Asma binte Umais in the same house to help her household work tells the story of her death in a very moving manner. When the day arrived she prepared food for her children, then she told Asma that she was going to her prayer room. She would say Takbeer loudly at various intervals. When Asma does not hear the sound of Takbeer she should go out to the mosque and tell Hazrat Ali (AS) about the death of his wife. If in the meantime the children come home give them food before telling them about the death of their mother. Hasan and Hussain arrived and Usma brought some food for them. They said they do not eat without their mother and she had to tell the children of the death of their mother. Both entered the prayer room and stayed with her for a while. Hazrat Ali (AS) arrived and prepared for the last rites. When he was giving her last bath he cried loudly. Asma asked the reason and he said he could not bear to see the wound by her side when the door of the house fell on her due to commotion by some of the companions of the Prophet when they all wanted Ali (AS) to come out of the house for the oath of Allegiance to Abu Bakr. After performing the last rites she was taken to the cemetery of Baqi in the darkness of the night for burial as per her wish. Very few family members were present at the burial of the daughter of the Prophet. Some historians say that she was buried in her own house which became part of the Masjid-e-Nabavi during the reign of Umavi Caliph Umar Ibne Abdul Aziz.

Tazia Burial at Karbala Talkatora

This is a new series an extension of Ashura, as the processionists move from Nakhas to Karbala Talkatora, scourging doing Matam, kamazani, alongside this procession is people carrying the Tazias a part of the House Imambada for burial.Women, children , men barefeet , head uncovered converge at the cemetery grounds of Talkatora, an ancient Shrine or Roza of Hazrat Imam Hussain, I was too tired to explore, I was barefeet, my scourging wounds, my forehead were making my concentration hazy, I wanted to get back home, but I shot all I could.
These are sensitive portrayal of a Shia custom , the burial of the Tazia.I dont know the actual history behind this practice.This is not done in Mumbai.
In Mumbai , the Tazias are found in the Sunni localities of Crawford Market, signifying the Martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain.Nothing more.

Nawab Jaffar Mir Abdullah

During the Procession of the Mehndi Hazrat Qasim , I had met the erstwhile Nawab Jafar Mir Abdullah who claims his ancestry from the ruling Nawabs of yore, he is a well read, cool mind person, not at all pompous of his blue blood or lineage.I met him for the first time, as I come to Lucknow for barely a few days , shoot , rush back to Mumbai.The only pilgrimage besides the spiritual ones, is one of a momentous important to me, paying respects to a master photographer Mr PC Little , this time I was not able to perform nor call him, as I was shooting non stop for three or four days.Mr PC Little is an authority on Lucknow British and Nawab history, more proficient than Google Search, on these two subjects as a lover of Lucknow.
Mr PC Little had spoken on my earlier visits about Nawab saab but our meeting was destined just this year.
I was invited to the Nawab Saabs Haveli, or mansion, in Sheesh Mahal annexe , we spoke on various topics, Bollywood, Satyajit Ray, Shatranj ke Khiladi, the new controversies with the fizzed out Umrao Jaan.I had breakfast at his table, shot some pictures.
I spoke to the Nawab Saab many months after my arrival from Lucknow, he did remember me .
I told him to e mail his side of his life story that I would add to my Word Press post on him.
I think he will send it to me one day.Perhaps.

Ek Nare Hyderi Ya Ali

On the streets of Naakhas, the Shiagarh of Lucknow you hear shouts of this singular cry, Ek Nare Hyderi Ya Ali, reverberating over a wintry chill, fragrance of rose water mingling with weeping blood, fresh , since 1400 years,Exclusively Shia pain.
What they are doing here on the street today on Ashura is what their forefathers did before them, this is the life line of a Shia heritage .
Only Azadari keeps the Shia heritage alive, nothing else.
This itself is Tabarah we dont really have to curse the killers of Imam Hussain , the curses come with the flow of our blood, young and old, the House imambadas , re echoes with Matam, after the Matam little girls shrieking Ek Nare Hyderi , getting a collective punch of a response Ya Ali.
These are mystical magic words, when a Shia is in danger he invokes Ya Ali..it is mentioned in many a battle the Holy Prophet also would call his cousin Ya Ali , the valour of Zulfiqar was well known, could Mauwiyah or the generation after him ever forget , the reduction of his family members life.
Yes it was Hazrat Ali, but scores were settled through the innocent blood of Hazrat Imam Hussain.Any way before I start sounding like a Mullah, back to the streets of Lucknow, the young guy who I was stalking , shooting his pain, I present herewith.

This is Ashura Lucknow , I captured the guy on the extreme right in my cameras view finder, I stalk him, as there was so much unsaid, but Hussainiyat characterized his pain, he was volatile till the end, these are a few frames of him.
In the picture at the end is Baney Qama a doyen, a veteran of the Kama Zani matam, he takes care of those who over bleed, tying bandages to the head.It was in his Anjuman that I had cut my forehead at Kazmain during Athvi.
He is a Moulaiee.He weeps as he sees the bloodletting, proud of his Shias , their sanguine nature of choosing Pain as the way of life.
Mera Mazloom Imam , means my Innocent Imam, of all time in Karbala during the Tyranny of Yazid of the Ummayad Caliphate, a demoon , devilish man, impersonating as an Islamist , with evil dessigns , to redesign Islam as his feudal property.
He had the rest of the so called followers under his thumb, it was justification of power through evil mindedness.Its a shame not a single Islmaic contemporary voice , uttered a word against the ensuing genocide of the kith and kin of the Holy Prophet.
It is the same thing today, people killed in the name of Islam, silence prevails, the powers of collective Islam are impotently quiet, fearing the loss of their own feudal kigdoms in the quicksand.So an American defence for the Holy Cities of Islam. Political Paranoid at the expense of Spirtuality.
This is the patch of pitch blackness, attempts to shift the blame on Shias, Jews Christians but not Yazid or his Yazidi Islam of that time for the killing of Imam Hussain, butchering of Innocent members of his Tribe.
Karbala is the bone of contention for both Shias and Sunnis.
The best way of ignoring Karbala, was to remove the contribution of the Holy Prophet , to the propagation of Islam by a prisitine Sect , this automatically suited the enemies of Shiasm, God was the important aspect Of Islam, I mean I do not want to get into an ugly controversy, but it did not work, this pristine sect is already alienated itself from the Brahelvi Sunnis of India.
Dargah visiting, ritualism , the noble work of the Sufi saints cannot be deleted like a temporary file.Its eternal, shaping the destiny of Man.That is why today every man sides with Hussain .Har Quam Pukaregi Hamare hain Hussain.
Everybody shares in Hussainiyat.
I am not a religion scholar, I believe live let others live, trying to gobble the planet for yourself is not Islam.Whether you call it Jehad. it will forever be reminiscent of Yazidiyat.Per Se.

How To Cut Your Forehead in 3 Steps

Step No 1

You wash your head with water , to soften your skull, you take the short sword in your hand, grasp it firmly, look at the edege of the blade tauntingly, yes you will cut the blade with your forehead , assymetrical warfare, scaring the blade.

Around you the begin the chants of Ya Ali, you take the sowrd , with all the strength slice your forehead, there is a paper tearing feel , nothing else, you feel the blood streaming from your wound, you have to be fast as the guys around you will snatch the sword, you have to be careful you dont cut them either.

One last stroke they have grabbed your sword, now you hit the open wound on your head with both the hands, aggravate it to open up.
If not satisfied you can take another shot..
They do this without stop at Rehmatabad Shia cemetery in Mumbai Mazgaon.
This is known as Kamazani or foreheading cutting in Moharam.
Any one can take a go, provided you feel the pain of Hazrat Imam Hussain , you are clean, you are protected by the aura of Ahle Bait.

This was a picture I took a single reluctant shot, this is base humanity, sanity, because Mind corrupts .. here the Mind has fled leaving behind a caracass that once was Man…His Rise His fall.
This poem was waiting in the wings , it bought the picture to life.
Ye I shoot the same stuff.. quite a coincidence, the last I shot him , he was walking semi nude on the road, the next time he lay in foetal sleep.. on the hot pavement. flies paying homage taking prasad from his beard..please dont throw up this one time…
