She could have hung herself from the fan
She could have thrown herself in the River Thames
But she chose to cut herself with a rusty old
Wilkinson Blade they said
Her wrists pouring lava crimson red
Like a running stream she bled
Her cheeks flushed her eyes
Ponds tears
Of aquamarine instead
Yes poetry had killed herself
Poetry in the land of the English Poets
Lay dead
A requiem
An English poet
Had killed English poetry
And into the darkness had fled
Michael Shepherd, David Hazell
TMcH Howlin Dervish
A handful of good English poets
Teary eyed with bowed head
Gathered around her body
Lying motionless at the morgue
No next of kith or kin
Just the marble platform
Serving as her stony bed
Poetry silent among the living Dead

Dalai Lama May Name Own Successor
Posted Nov 20,07 6: 48 PM CST in World

Source: Associated Press (newser) – Fearful that the Chinese will influence the process, the Dalai Lama says he may break with Tibetan tradition and choose his own successor, the BBC reports. For centuries, senior Buddhist officials have searched for a child born around the time the previous Dalai Lama died. ‘If China selected my successor after my death, the people of Tibet would not support him, ‘ he said. • China has intervened before: When the Dalai Lama selected the Panchen Lama, the second-most-important Tibetan figure, Beijing detained the boy and installed a pro-China replacement. The Dalai Lama, believed by Tibetans to be a reincarnation of his predecessors, has said that if he were reborn it would not be anywhere ruled by China.

May skip reincarnation this time, Dalai Lama says

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 20,2007 | 12: 30 PM ET

The Dalai Lama is floating the idea of breaking a centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist tradition by naming his successor or letting monks elect the next spiritual leader, according to news reports.
His comments in Japan come on the heels of a recent order by China that it must approve Tibet’s future spiritual leaders.
The order has fuelled concerns that China may forcibly choose a pro-Beijing leader once the current Dalai Lama is dead.
‘If the Tibetan people wish to uphold the Dalai Lama system, one possibility would be to select the next Dalai Lama while I am still living, ‘ the Dalai Lama was quoted as saying in an interview with the Japanese national newspaper, Sankei Shimbun..
http: //www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/11/20/dalai-lama.html

The Dalai Lama will soon name his successor
Words that have hit the Chinese very hard
Yes a foul for stealing someone’s homeland
The world shows the Red Card
The chant Free Tibet rends the air
From souls robbed of their freedom and scarred
The Chinese for human rights have no human regard
This Olympic run on the soul of an oppressed humanity
The world must Boycott and disregard
Peace Hope Harmony Justice

‘There is not a single aspect of the eighty-four thousand sections of the Buddha’s teachings which is not contained in Avalokiteshvara’s six syllable mantra ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’, and as such the qualities of the ‘mani’ are praised again and again in the Sutras and Tantras…. Whether happy or sad, if we take the ‘mani’ as our refuge, Chenrezig will never forsake us, spontaneous devotion will arise in our minds and the Great Vehicle will effortlessly be realized.’

Bicycles That Carry Powerful Beats, and Even a Rider or Two

By COREY KILGANNON
Published: November 29,2007
A new biker gang is roaming the streets of Richmond Hill, Queens. This crew of mostly teenagers can be seen riding along 103rd Avenue just west of the Van Wyck Expressway. The bikes roar, but the booming sound has nothing to do with engines — because there are no engines. They are ordinary bicycles, not motorcycles, although these contraptions look and sound more like rolling D.J. booths. They are outfitted with elaborate stereo systems installed by the youths.

City Room Blog
The latest news and reader discussions from around the five boroughs and the region.

Go to City Room » VideoMore Video » “This one puts out 5,000 watts and cost about $4,000, ” said Nick Ragbir,18, tinkering with his two-wheeled sound system, with its powerful amplifier, two 15-inch bass woofers and four midrange speakers. It plays music from his iPod and is powered by car batteries mounted on a sturdy motocross bike.

The riders are of Guyanese and Trinidadian background. In those countries, turning bicycles into rolling outdoor sound systems is a popular hobby.

“It’s really big where I come from in Trinidad, ” Mr. Ragbir said. “When I first came to New York, I started with two little speakers. People here thought I was crazy because no one here has really ever seen it, except maybe for some Spanish dudes with a radio strapped to their handlebars.”

He added: “People say, ‘It’s the next best thing to having a system in a car.’ But it’s better because you don’t even have to roll down the windows.”

Mr. Ragbir and his brother, Elvis Ragbir,22, and their friends build and maintain their combination bike-stereos in a garage on 103rd Avenue near 130th Street. Many say they finance their hobby by installing car stereos and doing other such handiwork.

They hit the streets on warmer days and spend other days in the garage tinkering with their bikes.

Inside, one can hear the whirring of power tools, conversation in heavy Caribbean accents and the occasional testing of a sound system. They make custom cabinets of wood or plastic to house the systems. Most of the bikes have decorative lighting and some have DVD screens for viewing while riding.

Stephan Sonnylal,17, worked on his yellow Mongoose motocross bicycle, bearing a 200-pound system, which features a 50-CD changer bearing a map of Trinidad. It puts out 3,000 watts of power and has three 10-inch speakers, a bank of midrange speakers and two tweeters. It cost $800, he said.

Clint Hasnoo,17, has a 1,600-watt system with four midrange speakers.

Nick Ragbir showed off his new bike, equipped with a sleek 1,500-watt system with the stereo and speakers encased in clear plastic custom boxes. The car battery and the console are mounted on the handlebars, and the four midrange speakers are mounted in the center of the bike frame.

“It’s not as powerful but it’s easier to ride around, ” Mr. Ragbir said.

Usually, the stereos crank out heavy Caribbean beats, but Mr. Ragbir cranked up the new system, which was playing a 1980s hit by the Outfield — “I Don’t Want to Lose Your Love Tonight” — and the near-deafening music had his friends bobbing their heads as they worked on their bikes.

The bikers said they have heard no complaints about the noise they make from residents or people they pass. And although there is a city law which says a summons may be issued if a person operates a personal audio device, like a radio, heard from up to 25 feet away, the bikers’ mobile stereos are less likely to attract attention because the noise does not persist in one place very long.

Mohan Samaroo,19, has a system mounted on his sturdy Mongoose, with four 12-inch speakers that can handle the 5,000 watts. There are extra braces resting on training wheels, which can support the heavy system and also an extra rider standing on the back. When the bike cruises down the street with Mr. Samaroo standing, he said, he looks like a D.J. behind a sound system at a nightclub.

“We measured it at a car show, ” he said. “It’s 150 decibels.”

The group rides in packs, each taking turns playing his sound system. Sometimes, the riders cruise down Atlantic Avenue to a McDonald’s, where car aficionados gather.

“People look at us like we’re crazy because no one’s really seen it here, ” said Nick Ragbir, who with Mr. Samaroo formed a business called Legal Intentionz to install stereos on bikes.

“Some guy hired me to build them for his kids, ” he said. “Now a lot of people want them.”

Only hate for Indian people hate for India with your brain so dead

To milk his cow on his cycle he sped
Leaving you panting your
Swollen finger and a thirsty hungry bedspread
Your hate for Indians understandable unsaid

Bubba is a relationship nickname formed from brother, given to boys to indicate their role in the family, especially the oldest male sibling. For some boys and men, bubba is used so pervasively it replaces the given name. The nickname may also be used outside the family by friends as a term of affection.
Because of its association with the southern part of the United States, bubba is often used outside the South as a pejorative meaning low economic status and limited education. The term ‘bubba’ may also be taken to mean one who is a ‘good ol’ boy’ who has difficult business and social relationships due to his self-absorbed outlook on life. In the US Army and Marines, bubba can mean a lay soldier, similar to grunt but with connotations of endearment instead of derision. For example ‘Can you make that device easier to work, ‘cus every bubba is gonna have to use it.’
Bubba has also developed into a proper noun, used as a term of endearment, to describe someone who is especially lovable, adorable, etc. Also used to identify someone’s significant other (i.e ‘She’s my Bubba’.[citation needed]) It is said to have evolved from the word ‘baby’, but its origin is unknown. Used predominantly in the Chicago area, specifically in the Edgewater/Andersonville neighborhoods. (wikipedia)

When a lady poet gets angry you better take care
Or her anger her grapes of wrath or her curses share
She will vociferously shout and swear

Racism is on the Rise

Racial superiority is a mere pigment of the imagination. ~Author Unknown

Be nice to whites, they need you to rediscover their humanity. ~Desmond Tutu

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality…. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. ~Martin Luther King, Jr

One day our descendants will think it incredible that we paid so much attention to things like the amount of melanin in our skin or the shape of our eyes or our gender instead of the unique identities of each of us as complex human beings. ~Franklin Thomas

Teen suicide spurs war on child prostitution
Wed Nov 28,2007 8: 51am EST

By Mickey Goodman

ATLANTA (Reuters) – At the age of 15, Samantha Walker was lured into prostitution on the streets of Toledo, Ohio, then taken against her will to Atlanta.

What makes her story different from thousands of others is that she testified against one of the men who paid for sex with her, helping to send him to prison.

But just weeks after the trial she took an overdose of drugs she was taking for depression and died at the age of 18.

More than 300,000 children are being sexually exploited in the United States, according to a study by the University of Pennsylvania.

Many of them end up in Atlanta, which authorities say has become a hub for prostitution in part because its busy airport makes it a destination for men seeking sex.

Where in the past pimps advertised the girls who worked for them on the walls of men’s rest rooms or on street corners, these days they use online bulletin boards like craigslist (http: //www.craigslist.org/) .

Customers set up liaisons after seeing girls on the sites, and then pay the girl or the pimp directly on the street, according to the Atlanta Police Vice Department.

Solomon Gort, a married man with two children, a white-collar job and a home in Atlanta’s suburbs, offered Walker’s pimp $50 for oral sex with her in June 2004. Continued…

But in India my homeland
Child prostitution
Has gone from bad to worse
Little girls coerced
Solicited by
Their parents to foreigners
In Goa Pushkar Manali
A scene every night they rehearse
Wanton sensuous and perverse
That as tear drops of innocence
On the soul of humanity
Weep and immerse
Wounds inflicted on
Tender bodies
That only time and tide can nurse
As a cobbled road all over the world
Little vulnerable children
Lost in the wilderness have to traverse

British teacher held in Sudan over teddy bear’s name

By Andrew Heavens
KHARTOUM, Nov 26 (Reuters) – A British primary school teacher has been arrested in Sudan, accused of insulting Islam’s Prophet by letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Mohammed, her school said on Monday.
Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, aged 54 from Liverpool, told Reuters they feared for her safety after receiving reports that young men had already started gathering outside the Khartoum police station where she was being held.
Teachers at Unity High School in central Khartoum said Gibbons made an innocent mistake and simply let her pupils choose their favourite name for the toy as part of a school project.
Police arrested Gibbons on Sunday at her home inside the school premises, said Unity director Robert Boulos, after a number of parents made a complaint to Sudan’s Ministry of Education.
Boulos said she had since been charged with ‘blasphemy’, an offence he said was punishable with up to three months in prison and a fine.
A spokesman from the British Embassy in Khartoum said it was still unclear whether Gibbons had been formerly charged. ‘We are following it up with the authorities and trying to meet her in person, ‘ he said.
Boulos said he had decided to close down the school until January for fear of reprisals in Sudan’s predominantly Muslim capital. ‘This is a very sensitive issue.’
‘We are very worried about her safety, ‘ he added. ‘This was a completely innocent mistake. Miss Gibbons would have never wanted to insult Islam.’
CHILDREN VOTED
Boulos said Gibbons was following a British National Curriculum course designed to teach young pupils about animals and their habitats. This year’s animal was the bear.
Gibbons, who joined Unity in August, asked a girl to bring in her teddy bear to help the Year 2 class focus, said Boulos.
The teacher then asked the class to name the toy. ‘They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Mohammed. Then she explained what it meant to vote and asked them to choose the name.’ Twenty out of the 23 children chose Mohammed.
Each child was allowed to take the bear home at weekends and asked to write a diary about what they did with the toy. Each entry was collected in a book with a picture of the bear on the cover, next to the message ‘My name is Mohammed, ‘ said Boulos.
The bear itself was not marked or labelled with the name in any way, he added, saying Sudanese police had now seized the book and had asked to interview the 7-year-old girl.
Boulos said the first he knew about the course was last week when he got a phone call from the Ministry of Education, saying a number of Muslim parents had made formal complaints.
One Muslim teacher at Unity, who also has a child in Gibbons’ class, said she had not found the project offensive.
‘I had no problem with it at all, ‘ the teacher said. ‘I know Gillian and she would never have meant it as an insult. I was just impressed that she got them to vote.’
The country’s state-controlled Sudanese Media Centre reported late Sunday that Gibbons had been arrested for ‘insulting the Prophet Mohammad’. It said charges were being prepared ‘under article 125 of the criminal law’ which covers insults against faith and religion.
No one was immediately available for comment from Sudan’s ministries of Education or Justice.
Unity, an independent school founded in 1902, is governed by a board representing major Christian denominations in Sudan, but teaches both Christians and Muslims aged 4 to 18. (editing by Mary Gabriel)

The 10 Best Foods You’re Not Eating
attachment sent to me by my dear friend jalal kazim from china

Pumpkin seeds

These jack-o’-lantern waste products are the most nutritious part of the pumpkin.

Why they’re healthy: Downing pumpkin seeds is the easiest way to consume more magnesium. That’s important because French researchers recently determined that men with the highest levels of magnesium in their blood have a 40 percent lower risk of early death than those with the lowest levels. And on average, men consume 353 mg of the mineral daily, well under the 420 mg minimum recommended by the USDA.

How to eat them: Whole, shells and all. (The shells provide extra fiber.) Roasted pumpkin seeds contain 150 mg of magnesium per ounce; add them to your regular diet and you’ll easily hit your daily target of 420 mg. Look for them in the snack or health-food section of your grocery store, next to the peanuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds.

Dried plums

You may know these better by the moniker “prunes,” which are indelibly linked with nursing homes and bathroom habits. And that explains why, in an effort to revive this delicious fruit’s image, producers now market them under another name.

Why they’re healthy: Prunes contain high amounts of neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids, antioxidants that are particularly effective at combating the “superoxide anion radical.” This nasty free radical causes structural damage to your cells, and such damage is thought to be one of the primary causes of cancer.

How to eat them: As an appetizer. Wrap a paper-thin slice of prosciutto around each dried plum and secure with a toothpick. Bake in a 400°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until the plums are soft and the prosciutto is crispy. Most of the fat will cook off, and you’ll be left with a decadent-tasting treat that’s sweet, savory, and healthy.

Goji berries

These raisin-size fruits are chewy and taste like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. More important, these potent berries have been used as a medicinal food in Tibet for over 1,700 years.

Why they’re healthy: Goji berries have one of the highest ORAC ratings—a method of gauging antioxidant power—of any fruit, according to Tufts University researchers. And although modern scientists began to study this ancient berry only recently, they’ve found that the sugars that make goji berries sweet reduce insulin resistance—a risk factor of diabetes – in rats.

How to eat them: Mix dried or fresh goji berries with a cup of plain yogurt, sprinkle them on your oatmeal or cold cereal, or enjoy a handful by themselves. You can find them at specialty supermarkets or at gojiberries.us.

Pomegranate juice

A popular drink for decades in the Middle East, pomegranate juice has become widely available only recently in the United States.

Why it’s healthy: Israeli scientists discovered that men who downed just 2 ounces of pomegranate juice daily for a year decreased their systolic (top number) blood pressure by 21 percent and significantly improved bloodflow to their hearts. What’s more, 4 ounces provides 50 percent of your daily vitamin C needs.

How to drink it: Try 100 percent pomegranate juice from Pom Wonderful. It contains no added sugars, and because it’s so powerful, a small glassful is all you need. (For a list of retailers, go to www.pomwonderful.com.)

Purslane

Although the FDA classifies purslane as a broad-leaved weed, it’s a popular vegetable and herb in many other countries, including China, Mexico, and Greece.

Why it’s healthy: Purslane has the highest amount of heart-healthy omega-3 fats of any edible plant, according to researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The scientists also report that this herb has 10 to 20 times more melatonin – an antioxidant that may inhibit cancer growth – than any other fruit or vegetable tested.

How to eat it: In a salad. Think of purslane as a great alternative or addition to lettuce: The leaves and stems are crisp, chewy, and succulent, and they have a mild lemony taste. Look for it at your local farmer’s market, or Chinese or Mexican market. It’s also available at some Whole Foods stores, as an individual leafy green or in premade salad mixes.

Cinnamon

This old-world spice usually reaches most men’s stomachs only when it’s mixed with sugar and stuck to a roll.

Why it’s healthy: Cinnamon helps control your blood sugar, which influences your risk of heart disease. In fact, USDA researchers found that people with type-2 diabetes who consumed 1 g of cinnamon a day for 6 weeks (about 1/4 teaspoon each day) significantly reduced not only their blood sugar but also their triglycerides and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Credit the spice’s active ingredients, methylhydroxychalcone polymers, which increase your cells’ ability to metabolize sugar by up to 20 times.

How to eat it: You don’t need the fancy oils and extracts sold at vitamin stores; just sprinkle the stuff that’s in your spice rack (or in the shaker at Starbucks) into your coffee or on your oatmeal.

Swiss chard

Hidden in the leafy-greens cooler of your market, you’ll find this slightly bitter, salty vegetable, which is actually native to the Mediterranean.

Why it’s healthy: A half cup of cooked Swiss chard provides a huge amount of both lutein and zeaxanthin, supplying 10 mg each. These plant chemicals, known as carotenoids, protect your retinas from the damage of aging, according to Harvard researchers. That’s because both nutrients, which are actually pigments, appear to accumulate in your retinas, where they absorb the type of shortwave light rays that can damage your eyes. So the more lutein and zeaxanthin you eat, the better your internal eye protection will be.

How to eat it: Chard goes great with grilled steaks and chicken, and it also works well as a bed for pan-seared fish. Wash and dry a bunch of Swiss chard, and then chop the leaves and stems into 1-inch pieces. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large sauté pan or wok, and add two garlic cloves that you’ve peeled and lightly crushed. When the oil smokes lightly, add the chard. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until the leaves wilt and the stems are tender. Remove the garlic cloves and season the chard with salt and pepper

Guava

Guava is an obscure tropical fruit that’s subtly acidic, with sweetness that intensifies as you eat your way to the center.

Why it’s healthy: Guava has a higher concentration of lycopene—an antioxidant that fights prostate cancer—than any other plant food, including tomatoes and watermelon. In addition, 1 cup of the stuff provides 688 milligrams (mg) of potassium, which is 63 percent more than you’ll find in a medium banana. And guava may be the ultimate high-fiber food: There’s almost 9 grams (g) of fiber in every cup.

How to eat it: Down the entire fruit, from the rind to the seeds. It’s all edible—and nutritious. The rind alone has more vitamin C than you’d find in the flesh of an orange. You can score guava in the produce section of higher-end supermarkets or in Latin grocery stores

Cabbage

Absent from most American kitchens, this cruciferous vegetable is a major player in European and Asian diets.

Why it’s healthy: One cup of chopped cabbage has just 22 calories, and it’s loaded with valuable nutrients. At the top of the list is sulforaphane, a chemical that increases your body’s production of enzymes that disarm cell-damaging free radicals and reduce your risk of cancer. In fact, Stanford University scientists determined that sulforaphane boosts your levels of these cancer-fighting enzymes higher than any other plant chemical.

How to eat it: Put cabbage on your burgers to add a satisfying crunch. Or, for an even better sandwich topping or side salad, try an Asian-style slaw.

There are many superfoods that never see the inside of a shopping cart. Some you’ve never heard of, and others you’ve simply forgotten about. That’s why we’ve rounded up the best of the bunch. Make a place for them on your table and you’ll instantly upgrade your health—without a prescription.

Beets

These grungy-looking roots are naturally sweeter than any other vegetable, which means they pack tons of flavor underneath their rugged exterior.

Why they’re healthy: Think of beets as red spinach. Just like Popeye’s powerfood, this crimson vegetable is one of the best sources of both folate and betaine. These two nutrients work together to lower your blood levels of homocysteine, an inflammatory compound that can damage your arteries and increase your risk of heart disease. Plus, the natural pigments – called betacyanins—that give beets their color have been proved to be potent cancer fighters in laboratory mice.

How to eat them: Fresh and raw, not from a jar. Heating beets actually decreases their antioxidant power. For a simple single-serving salad, wash and peel one beet, and then grate it on the widest blade of a box grater. Toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the juice of half a lemon.

You can eat the leaves and stems, which are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Simply cut off the stems just below the point where the leaves start, and wash thoroughly. They’re now ready to be used in a salad. Or, for a side dish, sauté the leaves, along with a minced clove of garlic and a tablespoon of olive oil, in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Cook until the leaves are wilted and the stems are tender. Season with salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice, and sprinkle with fresh Parmesan cheese.

‘Swastika carved into 17-year-old girl’s skin’
Teenage girl from Mittweida, East Germany, reports attack by four men; culprits allegedly carve a swastika on her hip. German police launch investigation; no arrests have been made so far

A 17-year-old girl reported Saturday that four neo-Nazis attacked her and carved a swastika into her skin.

Police were investigating the teenager’s allegation that the men attacked her after she tried to help a 6-year-old girl from the former Soviet Union who was being harassed by the group in the eastern town of Mittweida.

The four suspects allegedly threw the teenager on the ground and three of them pressed her down while the fourth one carved a swastika on her hip with a scalpel-like knife, police said.

The incident occurred November 3rd, but the 17-year-old girl did not report it immediately, police said. The younger girl confirmed the attack, they said.

The identities of the suspects and the two girls were not revealed, and there have been no arrests. One 19-year-old suspect was briefly detained, and then released, police said.

In the eastern German town of Cottbus, meanwhile, a court convicted a far right political activist of using the stiff-armed Nazi salute, which is banned in Germany, and sentenced him to six months in prison.

During the trial,71-year-old former lawyer Horst Mahler, a strategist for the far-right National Democratic Party, confessed to giving the Nazi salute when he reported to prison a year ago after a conviction in a separate case.

He has appeared in court frequently over the years, and this was his fifth conviction for either displaying banned Nazi symbols or denying the Holocaust, the court said.

In 2003, a Mainz court found Mahler guilty of condoning a crime for saying the September 11th,2001 attacks in the United States were justified and fined him several thousand dollars.

There is a new hijda holding the
Traffic at Turner Road Signal ahead
Dressed gloriously in a saree crimson red
A jewel in the crown of eunuch dom
Running behind speeding cars
Earning her daily bread
Her life an exclamation mark
A comma, a question mark
All bound to an androgynous
Silken thread
A transgender warring
Misinterpreted sexuality
A mannequin with a human head
The lowest in the hijda hierarchy
A stomach that’s under fed
The sorrows the agony
Hidden brow beaten
In an empty cavity
Between her two legs spread
A menstrual moroseness
That as tears has bled
As acid rain
From an untalkative
Eunuch god
