Shiasm and the Shia Women

The spiritual strength and indomitable spirit of the Shia woman..is unsurpassable..
Shiasm survives because of the Shia mother , Shia sister Shia aunt , grandmother.
They are the ones that instil in the Shia child the first seeds of Love of Ahle Bayt.

Shiasm generates through the womb of the Shia mother.
And honestly Shiasm is about the sufferings of Woman..the hardships of giving birth and seeing them slaughtered by Yazidiyat.
Yes Shiasm is about Bibi Fatima the mother of all ..
Shiasm is about the sufferings of a sister called Bibi Zainab who saw her belobved family being destroyed , she witnessed the blood bath at Karbala , but worst was to come at Sham or Damascus..
Shiasm is about Bibi Sakina the four month daughter of Imam Hussain , her love for her father , the love for her brothers the love for her Uncle Abu Fazlil Abbas .

Shiasm is considered heretic by the pompous pristine upholders of Faith..
Yes I accept Heresy if it makes more human than I am..
Hussain was another name of Humanity..
Har Kaum Pukaregi Hamare Hain Hussain..

When we cut ourselves there is a big hue and cry that our acts are not Islamic , yet on the other hand Muslims kill Muslims and the custodians in Saudi Arabia keep mum exactly as they kept mum when Yazid went on a rampage against the Holy Prophets family..

This is my tribute to the Shia woman called Shamim Shakir my mother.

Humanity and Hyderabad 2004

This was a Majlis at a private home in Hyderabad, the word synonmous with Hyderabad is Hospitality.
I dont remember this gentlemans name but he was a hotelier, he came to fetch me to attend his majlis.
As people arrived at his house for the majlis he touched each ones feet , this was his gesture , his personal love for those who had come at the bequest of Bibi Zainab..
Yes Hyderabad is this and much more , the Hyderabadis dont scrounge when it comes to Ghame Hussain..

The Hyderabadi restraunt owners go each year to Hussain Tekri Jaorah feed the masses till Chehlum, and they do it without any fanfare just Hyderabadi humility..

Here I must mention one more thing the Hindus of Hyderabad too are lovers of Imam Hussain and his mother Bibi Fatima, the fervor with which they recieve the Bibi Ka Alam on Ashura is what mutual coexistence is all about..
For the this is a moment of frozen in timelessness  and do see the Bibi ka Alam procession once in your life time..

The Sunnis and Shias live in peace each respecting the other.

As a matter of fact the Muttawalli of the Bibi ka Alawa is a respected Sunni gentleman.

The leaders of both the communities maintain peace without igniting hatred..
For me this is Islam I will see no further..
Under
One umbrella of Allah
One Prophet
One Holy Book Koran
And Ahle Bayt

All Humanity living in mutual peace.. as Indians of  a great nation… hope harmony and brotherhood.

The Hyderabadi Nohakar are very unique , they have their own predominant nasal, rendition of the Noha not be found anywhere else in India.
It has its base in classical musical ancestry, though Shias consider music to be Haram like the rest of the Muslim world.

Nohakars like late Sacchey and Zia too rendered the Nohas in a classical way..

Nohas are elegy recited describing the events of Karbala around the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain.

Hyderabad is a haven of culture and ancestry, Shias in Hyderabad bring in Moharam with a fervour that abounds in grief , mellowed sadness and nostalgia.
All around is a sea of black clothes , this is the badge of Faith of the Hyderabadi Shia.
Two months and eight days this sartorial blackness shall prevail.
I wear black clothes too for the same period . inspired by the Shias of Hyderabad.
I have been to Kolkatta to celebrate Ashura but Hyderabad stands out ..
Hyderabadis breathe Moharam, my policeman friend Sajjad Hussain would finish his duties and rush back to the Choti Bargah to bond with Baqar Bhai, the Alamdar brothers , food would be made outside on the streets to be distributed after each Majlis.

I am speechless realy when it comes to describing the Shia Hyderabadi, he lives in Hussain and Hussain lives in him.
And I am crying when I say this..

The blade matam, the kamazani, Bibi ka Alam the Chehlum procession is unique in its Hyderabadi flavor.

Ancestral homes like Nawab Kothi, Sharyar Palace have huge relics of Alams centuries old, well maintained.

I normally visit a city for barely three or four days and move out on the day of Ashura night itself.

But I make friends, though we dont keep in touch the memories remain.

The darner might be from Uttar Pradesh or even Mumbai but they love being called Kashmiri darners..Once upon a time it was the Kashmiri darner who sat outside Band Box Laundry and darned your garments that got torn accidentally or was attacked by insects, this is a precison art…the art of fine tuned darning.

This gentleman sits outsid a nondescript laundry at Waroda Road , an extension of Bandra Bazar Road on one side and Chapel Road on the other side.

I once stayed as a tenant during post riots of 93 at Agnes Pereiras house.
Agnes is an East Indian a formidable one woman army , you had to think twice before messing with her.
Her sons Basil Bosco and Brian are good friends.
It was recently I took Marziya my grand daughter to her house.

Moharam in Hyderabad Nawab Kothi 2004

.flickr-frame { text-align: left; padding: 3px; }

For the Shia Hyderabadis people of Hyderabad, nothing is greater than Azadari e Hussain.
These people rich , poor underpriviliged the Nawab and the beggar have one important ingredient Tehzeeb..call it culture.
Adab or respect.. both these qualities are also a common factor with a twin city of Shiasm called Lucknow.

The Nizam of Hyderabad will never be forgotten, he has built some of the finest Shia monuments , same with the Nawabs of Avadh or Lucknow .

Though Hyderabad has a different dialect which differs linguistically from the sweetness of Lucknow Urdu.. both are exemplary in the devotion of Imam Hussain a unique quintessential quality called Ghame Hussain.

I had literally coaxed my wife a staunch Lucknowi to visit Hyderabad for Chehlum in 2004 Chehlum is the 40 th day of the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain, she loved the people the city of Hyderabad, but opted for a Lucknowi bride for my son Asif Shakir.

I dont blame her but for me Hyderabad is something special.

I love the people their humility and their life during Moharam, the sea of black clothes , the Bargah the Choti Bargah and a Shia policeman called Sajjad Hussain.

However I must digress though my simple hearted wife was very keen on a wife for my younger son Saif Shakir, she hunted Lucknow, inumerable trips finlly to my hearts solace found him a match in Amchi Mumbai.

So I wont be surprised its true Marriages take place in Heaven ..and its either one or the other in the menagerie that make it a Hell on Earth.. Divorce Sucks but necessity is the mother of Convention.

This event is the 8 Moharam procession at the seat of the noble Nawabs of Hyderabad, blue blood , royal ancestry and all..
Times have changed at Nawab Kothi , much has been lost to time and tide yet the progeny of the Nawabs keep the Chirag of Ahle Bayt alive with their devotion..both the kids and the older folks leave no stone unturned to make Moharam each year an unforgettable one..
But mind you there are crochety conservative photography hating Nawabs too..there was this one who picked up my bag to throw it out during a Chehlum procession though I had taken permission from his son..luckily he was not from Nawab Kothi.
Well this is the flip side of Nawabi.. nothing personal.
There was one educated person who said photographs show Shias in a bad light, and the person knew I was all in black and a Shia.. yes I almost threw up.. my morning breakfast.

I dont need to scan old negatives at 6400 dpi, negatives that are badly gone but come alive as memories, thanks to this present of the Epson Scanner V 500 from an American Jew Dr Glenn Losack MD ..who came and shot Chehlum in Mumbai.. drenched in blood barefeet..

I had to literaly stop him from using my sword to cut his forehead .

Yes this is an American quality they go berserk and sometimes to do the right thing..
This has got nothing to do with the choice of Vice President by Mr Cain.
Dr Glenn Losack MD is an eminent psychiatrist from Manhattan New York but loves India immensely, he shot Moharam for the first time , he is very keen on shooting Moharam in Hyderabad, Lucknow and Hussain Tekri too.

He is the godfather figure of my 9 month old grand daughter Marziya Shakir.

His first present to her was the Powershot G9 a brilliant camera.. and Marziya was only 4 month old.
I use this camera till she grows up to to shoot with it too.

This was a textless picture but I elaborated it for a Flickr member Plasma Theory..
To show him my world beneath the emulsion as a Photo Blog..

I hope Rene from Indi Blogger has read this too..

The Koli community is found throughout India. Kolis are found in Maharashtra, Gujrat, AndhraPradesh and rest of India. In Maharashtra they are found in the coastal regions of Maharashtra. They are also one of the original inhabitants of Mumbai, then known as Bombay islands.

In Maharashtra the Kolis almost exclusively speak Marathi language, though some Koli communities speak a variant dialect of Marathi. The Kolis of Mumbai are dispersed all over the city, especially along the western coast of the city. The Kolis of Vasai are Hindu and Christian, though both belong to the Marathi ethnic group. The community has several subcastes , the prominent ones are Koli kolis, Mangela Kolis, Vaity kolis,Christian Kolis, Mahadeo kolis, Suryawanshi kolis.

The name is possibly derived from the Marathi word "Koli", which means a spider (one who spins a web – in Marathi that translates to ‘one who weaves a net’, and hence the fisherman, who weaves the net, is also called a Koli).

In 1901 the number of Kolis in all India was returned as nearly 3.75 million, but this total includes a distinct weaving caste of Kolis or Koris in northern India.

The estimate of Koli population in Gujarat is based on 1931 enumeration which is the last time caste based enumeration was taken in India.

[edit] Ekveera

Kolis from around Mumbai worship the goddess Ekveera situated at the Karla caves, Malavli, Lonavla. This goddess is worshipped the most on Chaitra Purnima (15th day of first month in the Marathi calendar.

When Bombay was a dumbbell-shaped combination of 7 islands tapering, at the centre, to a narrow shining strand beyond which could be seen the finest and largest natural harbour in Asia. "Midnight’s Children", Kolbhat, Palva Bunder, Dongri, Mazagaon, Naigaum and Worli were among the islands the Kolis gave their names to. Kolbhat was distorted to Colaba; Palva Bunder became Apollo Bunder. The temple to Mumbadevi in Dongri gave rise to the name of the city. One of the smaller islands near Colaba, variously called Old Man’s Island and Old Woman’s Island, was a distortion of the Arab name Al-Omani, given for the same fishermen who ranged as far away as the gulf of Oman.

The development of the modern city slowly marginalised these people of the sea. They were removed from Dongri already in 1770 by the East India Company. This historical process of elimination eventually pushed them to the strand near Cuffe Parade, from where they plied their ancient trade of deep water fishing. The Backbay reclamation of the 60’s would have further marginalised them had they not approached the courts to stay the reclamation. Now their settlements are protected by law. The places where the koli communities places called Koliwada. You will find these koliwadas from mumbai city to its suburbs. There is also a railway station called Koliwada on central railway horbour line route, which name replaced with Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar for migratory population of sikhs from borders of India, though ther was a strong agitation made by this people but government overlooked it as the strong vote bank was seen by the existing Indira Gandhi Govt. Also the fishing mangroves named Ravali, Sheikh mestri are dumped now for migratory population in the city and the largest village Koliwada (Sheev) on border of city had become a property of Municipal corporation after BIT takeover there land. These Chawls known as NSP sheds are under SRA are broken for redevelopment of city, These are same people known for Bokshi business where women also does fishing with men whch is resembled in old folk song "Lay Lay Lay Lay Layenkarni, Bokshila Jaataan Sheevkarni" Sheevkarni means fisherwomen of Sheev or Sion Koliwada village. No support to these people only on paper conservation of these adivasi mulnivasi tribes are done but sky crappers are built from all sides of this chawls system.

Kolis are same who fought for joining Maharashtra when Gujrati population wanted it to be with Gujrat as a material gain and business prospects for which more than 160 peoples lost there life in for agitation against it.

In Marathi, Koli means the originally heterogeneous marginal tribe-castes that took late in history to agriculture and were often press-ganged for porterage in army service. The same word also means spider and fisherman, presumably because the fisherman makes and uses a net to catch his prey as a spider his web.

[edit] Koli folk dance & songs
The koli community has its own distinct identity and lively dances. The dance incorporates elements that this community is most familiar with – sea and fishing. The dance is performed by both men and women divided into two groups, where fishermen stand in two rows holding oars in their hands. The dancers move in unison, portraying the movement of the rowing of a boat. Fisherwomen are in the opposite rows with their arms linked and advancing towards men folk. The separate formation then break up and they dance together with movements symbolizing the waves, the breakers and rowing from cliff to cliff and casting of nets to catch the fish.

There are many koli songs which are famous all over India. Some known once are as follows. Aga Pori Sambhaal Dariyala Tufaan Ayalay Bhari; Gorya wer Basali ; Me Hai Koli ; Chikna Chikna ; Dang Ding ; Lal lal pagote ; Chandnan Chandnya ; Dirki la bombil; Maza Kombra ; Me Dolker ; Haldin Bharlay ; Dol Doltai ; Nach go Nach ; Galyat Sakali ; Paru go Paru ; Lai Lai Liakarni ; Gomu Tuze Dadan Go; Vadal Wara ; Valav re Nakva ;

[edit] Koli Festivals
Narali punaw: This is “The day” for kolis. As per traditions kolis know that after this day the wind strength and direction changes in favor of fishing. This is the day when kolis celebrate the kick off of new business season. This is the day when they pray to god sea and make puja of their boats and begins their fishing season. There are songs for this occession as..san aaila go narali punvecha…

Shimga – Shimaga means holi in koli accent haa-wa-li. Holi and Koli goes long way. It is one of the most important Festival for Kolis. There are many koli songs for this occession

Bandra Bazar Fish Market

Bandra fish market is place of pilgrimage for those who love fish as a staple diet.
I have been visiting this market since 20 years and the fisher women have not aged a bit, these impeccable ladies are courteous , not foul mouthed , very polite and respectful.

All the faces at the Bandra fish market are impressive, though you have to bargain to get a good price, the best time to get a good rate is at 1 pm when the fisherwomen have to close shop to run home to make chappatis for their family.
Hot chappatis thats what their husbands and sasu bais want.

On their feast days they dress ostentatiously, they love yellow metal.. yes gold is their birthright.

I get along very well with the Koli or fisherman community, having lived close to Sasoon Docks once upon a time..early 60s.

Than I stayed before the riots at Dand Pada Danda…

The riots was the worst Muslim and Hindu night mare ..
It hit the secular soul of Peace loving Mumbai ..the wounds are still raw.
One lives with them..
