over the heads of states it flew
from one country to another
as it grew
born in Mexico
strange but true
a scourge of god
called the swine flu
on its path people slew
how why what
yet no clue
face masks
deathly hue
silenced lips
among the few
people standing
in a queue
the line to the morgue
a motley crew
what you eat
is what you spew
save the Muslim and the Jew
save the vegetarian Hindu
forbidden flesh
a pact renew
give the devil
his deathly due
missing pork
in the stew

The swine flu outbreak (2009) refers to the spread among humans of a new strain of H1N1 swine influenza virus. The outbreak is believed to have begun in March 2009.[45] Local outbreaks of an influenza-like illness were first detected in three areas of Mexico, but the the outbreak was not clinically identified as a new strain until April 24, 2009. Its presence was soon confirmed in various Mexican states and Mexico City. Within days isolated cases (and suspected cases) began to appear elsewhere in Mexico, the U.S., and several other Northern Hemisphere countries. By April 28, the new strain was confirmed to have spread to other regions. Countries with confirmed cases included Spain, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Israel, and the virus was suspected in many other nations, including South Korea and Austria, with over 3,000 candidate cases, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise its pandemic alert level to phase 4.[46][47] A phase 4 warning means that the WHO considers that there is “sustained human to human transmission”; whereas phases 5 and 6 represent “widespread human infection”. Despite the scale of the alert, the WHO stated on April 29 that the majority of people infected with the virus make a full recovery without need of medical attention or antiviral drugs.[48] Until April 29, all cases were said to be people who lived in or had been to Mexico, but on this date Spain confirmed a case of a person who had not traveled to Mexico.[49]

The new strain is an apparent reassortment of several strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1, which analysis at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified as a strain endemic in humans, a strain endemic in birds, and two strains endemic in American and Eurasian pigs (swine).[50]

In late April both the United Nations WHO and the U.S. CDC expressed serious concern about the situation, as it had the potential to become a flu pandemic due to the novelty of the influenza strain, its transmission from human to human, and the unusually high mortality rate in Mexico.[51] On April 25, 2009, the WHO formally determined the situation to be a “public health emergency of international concern”, with knowledge lacking in regard to “the clinical features, epidemiology, and virology of reported cases and the appropriate responses”.[52] Government health agencies around the world also expressed concerns over the outbreak and are monitoring the situation closely.

On April 24, 2009, Mexico’s schools, universities, and all public events were closed until May 6, 2009.[53][54] A few schools in the U.S. closed due to confirmed cases in students.[55][56]

The World of Pain – Dr Glenn Losack MD

Healing Doctor

Healing Doctor

www.glennlosackmd.com/-/glennlosackmd/

Picture shot by Dr Glenn Losack MD

Dr Glenn Losack MD .
He is a magician of a photographer from Manhattan New York..
We met on the net , the rest his history.
He visited my home in Mumbai had lunch with my family and we treated him as family.
He gave me the G9 Canon as a gift though being mortal and human I was hoping he would give me his Nikon D80 before he went back to the States.

Using a camera that once belonged to Glenn Losack is more than a relic.. and the doctor is an icon figure among the Shias and the beggars of Haji Ali.
The Shia community endeared themselves to Dr Glenn Losack, because he respected their religiosity , wore black, shot bare feet , the Kurla juloos and the Chehlum juloos.
The doctor understood the Shia pain and Ghame Hussain.
I had to explain to him the Alams , the Taboots and the Shia symbolism.

The doctor now plans to come and shoot Ashura along with another good photographer from Flickr Eric Parker .

I think Dr Glenn Losack must have been the first American photographer to climb up Haji Malang and climb down the same day.

Laxmi Narayan Tripathi became his Rakhi sister ..

I also took Dr Glenn Losack to Hijda Gully No 1 at Kamatipura , but the building was being renovated and the Doctor wanted to pay respects to Zeenath Guru.

At Haji Malang the doctor had lunch with Baby Guru and other transgenders.

The Doctor was highly impressed with Habib Nasser when he visited Habibs house the day he arrived and saw Habibs video of his slashed back and the 200 stitches to put it back in order.

The absolute marvelous photography of Dr Glenn Losack MD

One American Photographer who captures India…

I am indebted to him for allowing me to post his pictures in my photo stream.

A physician, psychiatrist, musician/composer, world traveller, seasoned/award winning photographer, international medical lecturer, charity worker, cynical, sardonic, wry, usually pessimistic and a great lover of Indian food, Guinness and the Beatles. After 15 years on the couch & headed for his second couch he is still nonplussed about this absurd, preposterous, cockamamie life we all lead. Home base is in the East Village of Manhatten ( where else?), when he is stateside.Realizing life is short & getting shorter, wanting more than “just being a doctor” making money and living in a fish bowl, like his colleagues, Dr. Losack semi-retired from his medical practice at the ripe old age of forty to pursue his true passions: Circling the globe many times east and westward, living a good part of the year in the third world, and doing things his colleagues say they ‘will do’ but never do.

He considers himself lucky to have travelled in over 50 nations but is honored & humbled to have had the experience of photographing India and other third world nations thousands of years old.

Dr Glenn Losack MD is godfather to my grand daughter Marziya Shakir …

Through Dr Glenn Losack MD I met two wonderful friends both American , both courageous , both beautiful , both have influenced and captivated the soul of this Indian Photo Blogger..

American Jew and a Shia Pandit

Dr Glenn Losack MD and I met on cyberspace , he had seen my pictures of Moharam, and the Rafaees , and had decided to connect with me at Ipernity and Italk News..
He left messages for me I replied , he directed me to his website..and I told him I would like to write some poems on his Indan images as I knew the metaphor in his pictures..He had shot the soul of India I wanted to flesh some of them with text-
Not that Dr Glenn Losacks pictures need text..He jumped to the idea and began sending me pictures for my Flickr photostream.
We had much in common, I love vultures so does he but I love Parsis too and he and his wife had stayed with a Parsi family in Colaba close to my mothers house at Strand cinema, the family was of Mehli Mistry.
He has been coming to India since 1997..
He is from Manhatten New York a practising psychiatrist.
Dr Glenn arrived in India by the AI 144 that was delayed by 5 hours, so I had to make two trips one at 11.30pm 13 th February 2008 , and the other at 4am.. on 14th February 2008.
I dropped him at his hotel in central Mumbai and came back to Bandra.
Dr Glenn Losack gave me the Canon G9 powershot camera with Raw facility as a gift..
This picture was shot by Habib and I dont blame him my Nikon lens is truly defective and jammed.
This was outside Habib Nassers house.
We had come here , after I had picked Glenn from Haji Ali taken him to NAB , and to Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat..
I took him to Moghul Masjid, Chor Bazar, Hijda Gully No1Kamatipura, Goghri Mohalla, Null Bazar, Pydhoni, Bhendi Bazar and after dropping him at his hotel returned to my house at Bandra..
This was on 15th February 2008.

Haji Ali

Haji Ali

Dr Glenn Losack MD can bear pain or anything but his skin is sensitive to the harsh rays of the Indian sun, so he completely shaved of his hair .

Just a cap was his only protection as he walked the streets of Mumbai and Haji Malang mountains near Kalyan.

All his stuff can be see at

or at my Flickr photo stream where he has given me permission to poetize some of his works.

Excerpts
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Patna Saheb Shatrughan Sinha, after giving a week-long head start to his nearest rival and fellow actor Shekhar Suman, hit the roads of Patna on Friday to promote his candidacy.

Accompanied by his wife and party leaders, Sinha conducted a road show in the southern parts of the city including Kankarbagh, Hanuman Nagar, Postal Park, and Bhootnath Road where he was mobbed by hundreds of his fans and supporters.

Sinha also visited the Patna University area stopping by at the Kali Mandir, Darbhanga House, Sai Temple, and the Chitragupta Temple.

While the BJP leader was covering the eastern and southern parts of the state capital, his wife Poonam Sinha, held her own road show in the western parts of the town including Sheikhpura, Khajpura, and Rukanpura. She was accompanied by the BJP MLA from Patna West Nitin Navin.

I am a very close well wisher and consider both Mrs Poonam Sinha and Mr Shatrughan Sinhas as my family- I wish them all success and best wishes .

Feroze Khan was not just a Muslim he was a Indian to the core..
People like Feroz Khan walk this planet only once..leave behind their memories in celluloid on the wide screen of a motion picture lovers heart.
Wikipedia

Feroz Khan (Hindi: फ़िरोज़ ख़ान, Urdu: فیروز خان), (born September 25, 1939 – April 26, 2009) , was an Indian Actor, Film editor, Producer and Director in the Hindi film industry.

Feroz Khan was born in Bangalore, India. His father was Sadiq Ali Khan Tanoli, who was a Pathan originally from Ghazni province of Afghanistan and his mother (Fatima) came from Iran. He has three brothers Sanjay Khan, Sameer Khan and Akbar Khan, and one sister, Dilshad Begum. After his schooling from Bangalore, he came Mumbai where he made his debut as second lead Hero in Didi in 1960

[edit] Career

For the next five years he was forced to play the second to last lead in most of the movies. Through the early 1960- 1970s he made low-budget porn-movies opposite starlets. He also appeared in an English-language film titled Tarzan Goes to India in 1962 opposite Simi Garewal. His first big hit was in 1965 with the release of Oonche Log. It was his first major hit, but failed to attain the success he had hoped. Again, in the same year, he played a sacrificing lover in the mushy musical Arzoo. With this, Khan earned his entry into A-list second leads. With the film Aadmi Aur Insaan (1969), Khan won his first Filmfare award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. In 1971- 1975 he appeared alongside his real-life brother Sanjay Khan in the hit film Mela.

He turned into a successful producer and director so as to improve his career opportunities as a leading man. He produced, directed and starred in the 1975 -77 film Dharmatma which was the first Indian film to be shot in Afghanistan and was also his first blockbuster hit as producer, director and star. This movie was inspired by the Hollywood film The Godfather. In 1976 he was one of the many actors to appear in the cult classic horror film Nagin which also had his brother Sanjay in one of the lead roles.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he was a leading Bollywood star. He directed and starred in many of his films. The movie Qurbani (1980) was the biggest hit of his career and also launched the singing career of Nazia Hassan. In 1986 he directed and starred in Janbaaz which was a box office hit.[2] One of his best movies, with an all star cast, great songs and excellent cinematography. In 1988 he directed and starred in Dayavan which was a remake of a South Indian film titled Nayagan. After he directed and starred in Yalghaar (1992), he took a long break from acting for 11 years and took to producing, directing and even editing a few films. He launched his son Fardeen Khan’s career with the 1998 film Prem Aggan which was however a box office failure. In 2003 he produced and directed Janasheen (2003) which also starred his son Fardeen and marked Firoz’s acting comeback, it would be pertinent to mention here that he always used performing animals in his films – a Chipanjee & lion were used in this Janasheen but People for Animals (PFA) Haryana -[1] chairman Naresh Kadyan moved a complaint in the court of law at Faridabad for animal cruelty & legal action as per law against the Producer, Director & actor. He starred with his son again in Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena (2005) which was not directed by him and most recently appeared in Welcome (2007).

He also starred in the Punjabi film Bhagat Dhanna Jat (1974).

[edit] Personal life

In 1965, he married Sundari, a designer and part of the Page Three circuit in Mumbai.[3] They had two children together, Laila and Fardeen Khan (b. 1974). In 1985, after 20 years of marriage, he divorced his wife.

His son married Natasha Madhwani, the daughter of his occasional on-screen lover Mumtaz. His daughter Laila is married to Indian tennis player Rohit Rajpal.

He died on Sunday, 26th April, 2009 at the age of 69, in his Bangalore farm house. He was a known Indian nationalist. The actor had been diagnosed with cancer over a year before his death. [4].

Iraqi Kama Matam Chehlum Mumbai 2009

Habib Nasser a Shia photographer is the founder of this unique form of Iraqi Matam on the streets of Mumbai as part of the Chehlum Juloos that starts at JJ Hospital and moves towards the Rehmatabad Shia cemetery Mazgaon.

Men boys cut their heads in unison to the quintessential chant of Ya Hussain Ya Hussain..

Its here that I cut my head too, the ritual known as Kama Zani or Kama Matam. Habib does not participate in the event here but he does the hardcore sword matam at the Rehmatabad Shia cemetery. The scenes in the interior of the cemetery is akin to a war zone , blades flying in the air and the entire area flooded with blood.

However I will only show you the choreography of pain through the Iraqi Kama Matam..

Chehlum is the 40 day of Moharam or also known as Arbaeen ..of the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain, this is a peaceful, mammoth juloos or procession, with kids women and elders trailing the procession all the way to the cemetery.

Mumbai Moharam is larger than life and one of its kind..and the Iraqi Kama Matam takes you back to the streets of Karbala where this Matam is performed .

Habib has imported all the daggers, machetes , and the carbonized razor sharp blade is enough to cut the flesh all the way to the bone.

There is no casualty, the bleeding is stopped by rose water or plain water and nothing else.

No septic shots, no ointment no antiseptics or antibiotics.

I dont cut myself severely because than its impossible to shoot pictures with the blood flowing into the viewfinder of the camera.

This is another pictorial journey into the LIfe of the Shia.. a great moment called Ghame Hussain.

Shah ast Hussain, Badshah ast Hussain
Deen ast Hussain, Deen Panah ast Hussain
Sardad na dad dast, dar dast-e-yazeed,
Haqaa key binaey La ila ast Hussain

Loosely translated

Ruler is Hussain, Emperor is Hussain,
Faith is Hussain , guardian of faith is Hussain .
Offered his head and not the hand to Yazid.
Truly, the mirror of faith is Hussain

Words of Khwajah Moinuddin Chishty Ajmeri on the Gates of the Bulund Darwaza Ajmer

Bleeding for Hussain , to keep the memory of his supreme sacrifice alive is a way of overcoming pain.. Ghame Hussain.

Moharam celebrated by the Shia Muslims is a statement a protest against aggression of the spiritual and human soul of Man.

Moharam is a 1400 year old protest against all forms of terrorism, simply called Yazidiyat, promoted by Yazid the Caliph of the Ummayad Dynasty.. against Imam Hussain the revered grandson of the Holy Prophet of Islam who met a tragic end fighting for the right of Man.

Fighting to keep the Faith of the Maker Alive ..his head was decapitated along with the heads of his male family members , and than placed on spears to be displayed at the Court of Yazid in Damascus.

This is early Arab barbarism..women children no one was spared.

The Shias all over the world mourn the death of Imam Hussain, the 10 th of Moharam is called Ashura and the 40 th day is called Chehlum.

Every Day is Ashura every place is Karbala

I show you through pictures the ritualism of overcoming pain..as seen In India during Moharam..flagellation’s, head cutting as performed by the Shias.

Swami Shankaracharya
"It is Hussain’s (ﮫﻨﻋﻰﻠﺎﻌﺘﷲﺍﻰﻀﺮ) sacrifice that has kept Islam alive or else in this world there would be no one left to take Islam’s name."

Rabindranath Tagore
"In order to keep alive justice and truth, instead of an army or weapons, success can be achieved by sacrificing lives, exactly what Imam Hussain (ﮫﻨﻋﻰﻠﺎﻌﺘﷲﺍﻰﻀﺮ) did."

Edward Gibbon
"In a distant age and climate the tragic scene of the death of Hussain (ﮫﻨﻋﻰﻠﺎﻌﺘﷲﺍﻰﻀﺮ) will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader."
[The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, London, 1911, volume 5, pp391-2]

Mahatma Gandhi
"My faith is that the progress of Islam does not depend on the use of sword by its believers, but the result of the supreme sacrifice of Hussain (ﮫﻨﻋﻰﻠﺎﻌﺘﷲﺍﻰﻀﺮ), the great saint."

Katle Hussain Asal Margae Yezid Tha;
Islam Zinda Hota Hai har Karbale Ke Baad.

(The Martyrdom of Hussain was indeed the Death of Yezid;
Islam is rejuvenated after each and every Karbala).

Muhammad Iqbal (from Lahore, Pakistan) said:

"Imam Husain uprooted despotism forever till the day of Judgment. He
watered the dry garden of freedom with surging wave of his blood, and
indeed he awakened the sleeping Muslim nation. If Imam Husain had
aimed at acquiring a worldly empire, he would not have traveled he
did. Husain weltered in blood and dust for the sake of truth. Verily
he, therefore, became bed-rock (foundation) of the Muslim creed; There
is no God but Allah."

Charles Dickens had said the following about Imam Husain (AS):

"If Husain fought to quench his worldly desires, then I do not
understand why his sisters, wives and children accompanied him. It
stands to reason therefore that he sacrificed purely for Islam."

Thomas Carlyle has relayed this about the Tragedy of Karbala:

"The best lesson which we get from the tragedy of Karbala is that
Husain and his companions were the rigid believers of God. They
illustrated that numerical superiority does not count when it comes to
truth and falsehood. The victory of Husain despite his minority
marvels me!"

The famous, Dr. K. Sheldrake on Imam Husain (AS) said this:

"Husain marched with his little company not to glory, not to power or
wealth, but to a supreme sacrifice and every member of that gallant
band, male and female, knew that the foes were implacable, were not
only ready to fight but to kill. Denied even water for the children,
they remained parched under a burning sun, amid scorching sands yet no
one faltered for a moment and bravely faced the greatest odds without
flinching."

World famous Arab historian al-Fakhri has said this about Imam Husain’s
sacrifice:

"This is a catastrophe whereof I care not to speak at length, deeming
it alike too grievous and too horrible. For verily, it was a
catastrophe than that which naught more shameful has happened in
Islam…There happened therein such a foul slaughter as to cause man’s
flesh to creep with horror. And again I have dispersed with my long
description because of it’s notoriety, for it is the most lamented of
catastrophes."

Of late I have been getting a lot of hate comments on my posts pertaining to my religious sets , I try to ignore it or delete it, but when I see a very dangerous message attacking the secular spirit of my character as a last recourse I block the person.

There may be a lot of stuff on Flickr that I may not like, but I dont see it nor do I make any adverse comments.. matter of fact I am not a Flickr browser, I only see pictures of my friends and contacts.

I firmly believe in Freedom of Expression but it should not denigrate my religious beliefs , the color of my skin ,or my person or choice of gender..or the Hijda sets on my photo stream.

I set my privacy permission as follows..

Who will be able to see, comment on, or add notes

* See: Anyone

* Add notes and tags: Only you

I have sent a message to Flickr customer care how someone who is not my contact can breach my Flickr privacy as regards to my comment option.

“This is to show you that my privacy and permission is marked friends and family so how come anyone comments on my post , someone who is not even my contact just a free Flickr member.
Or is the free Flickr membership to harass a pro Flickr member.”
Even pro members should not harass Free members ..for me like you Flickr is a home away from home we come here to share our pictures out thoughts our happiness and our pain.Flickruniverse is a Brotherhood of Peace Hope and Harmony.

Advocate Abbas Kazmi my dear friend has created a whirlpool on Times of India dated 17April 2009 ..by saying” I m not sure if Kasab is from Pakistan”
Yes Abbas Kami is the new defense lawyer for the gunner Ajmal Amir Kasab who is in the dock for the 26/11 carnage in Mumbai city.
In the Times of India article written by Kartikeya titled “Kasabs New Lawyer Set For Battle dated “17 April 2009.
The choice of the Judiciary in selecting Advocate Abbas Kazmi is laudable , it shows that we in India uphold the laws that pertain to human rights irrespective of caste color or creed.
And this is going to be a really larger than life court battle in the offing..
We congratulate Advocate Abbas Kazmi and wish him the very best in upholding the laws of our land to the best of his abilities.

Akbar Bhai started Cheap Jack, and now it is Something Special.
Akbar Bhai is my finest Bohra friend who has helped me grow in my creativity over the years.. Akbar Bhai sells embroidery stuff and other crafts item..a shop that is visited by all the school children.
Akbar Bhai had invited me for His Holiness’s birthday celebrations at the Khar Bohra Mosque this week , but to my bad luck and a prior work commitment I could not make it.
This was an event as a photographer I would have not missed ,as I had taken my American photographer friend Dr Glenn Losack MD to shoot His Holiness in his car at Null Bazar last year.. a moment he will never forget he told me of women and mean paying homage to the greatest holy figure and a Messenger of Peace in our contemporary world ..

This set at Flicker on the Bohras is my tribute to the followers of his Holiness the dynamic peace loving Bohras of Mumbai…The Bohras lead the way and are a important part of the secular fabric of Amchi Mumbai.

And my tribute to Akbar Bhai of Something Special my finest Bohra friend.

My oldest Bohra friend is Akbar Bhai Chamdawala of Roma at Byculla Bridge.

Bohri Mohalla is the food eaters delight and comes to life during Ramzan.

I just spoke to Joe Dias a few minutes back, wishing him a very Happy Easter..I told him that when I walked the Lenten path it was not Jesus Christ but my strength came from the little children , that walked with the parents , without cribbing, and mind you this is a walk that begins at 9.30 am and ends at 4.30 pm.. so you can imagine the 45 degree heat , the humidity.. but all forgotten in the name of Faith..There were people who offered cold drinks , water to the processionists.. and these were from other communities.
This is Mumbai ..a fabric made of various threads the fabric of our mutual existence

14 Stations Of The Cross Mumbai 2009

This morning I was late so I missed the events at Sacred Heart Church Khar W from where the Good Friday or the 14 Stations of the Cross begin,.

“The 21 st Annual Lenten Walking Pilgrimage set off through Golibar subway, into Santa Cruz East, across the highway , past St Anthonys Church upto KalinA and back to St Charles Convent in Vakola 3.30pm.

The pilgrims stopped at different spots along the way, near street crosses or chapels and a troupe enacted the different Stations of the Cross.

These are Biblical scenes with characters enacting the happenings of over 2000 years., when Christ was crucified .

Various scenes from the passion play, crucifixion, and even the resurrection of Jesus Christ were dramatized , thousands of of the faithful prated devoutly and mourned Jesus death.”

This procession was started 20 years back by the founder president of CROSS Org , by Joe Dias.
Today was the hottest day and I was in real bad shape , because of my diabetic condition, I collapsed several times on the road, but managed to complete the entire length of the event ..a feat that I had photographed last year too.

Walking with the Christians the Walk of Christ means a lot to me, I owe my education to them they showed me path and never was I made to feel that Christianity is better than Islam..
Actually the Padres who taught me at Holy Name High School Colaba , made my Faith in my own religiosity much more stronger..I pay my tribute here to two priests who were responsible for this late Fr Stephen Nazareth and Late Fr Leslie Ratus.

Even the late Cardinal Gracias who walked the quadrangle of my school would pat my head ..yes Christianity has given me much and made me what I am today.

My late parents Mohamed and Shamim Shakir taught me to respect all religiosity and this was the source of my beliefs and my conviction..

And I know as tears drop from my eyes they must be happy that I shot pictures of a walk that is a state of life towards Peace, and walking with a community I hold in the highest regard.

I dedicate this series to my very dear friend Fleur De Lys. ..of Flickr.

This entire series posted at Flickr only.
