red light area
peela house
mumbai cages
inside a sweaty
creaky metal bed
for rs 50 a shot
for anothe rs 50
she will give you head
a commodity on hire purchase
that you cannot wed
a cavernous hell hole of despair
between her legs spread
she feeds her illegitimate child
with what you give her as bread
the rest she gives to the madam
a false move
she is dead
the cages no escape
wings cut badly damaged
instead
as she waits outside
for a migrant dick head
mustard oil
a red langot
he will plow ahead
before he entered
he carefully hid his money
and his brahmin thread

I was in town last Friday , after finishing perambulation of the Kamatipura and Chor Bazar flea markets, I met Syed, at Piru Lane moved to have my samovar hot Kaava at Khushali , than to Moghul Masjid, shot a few pictures of Moghul Masjid , than proceeded towards Babula Tank Road to my favorite subjects Sleepy Joes.
Now I decided to take a cab home back to Bandra, than like a bolt of lightning, I thought why not shoot the Cages ..The red light area of Mumbai, so I requested the cab driver, that I was wanting to shoot pictures , I immediately put my Bandra Samachar Press Card round my neck, thank you Mr. Clarence Gomes.,. who gave me this card..,
This was my first shot from the cab with my Nikon D70 disaster and the 80/ 200 Nikon 2.8 lens, I took two rounds but was not satisfied, I am a close up photographer, so I paid the cab driver , walked on foot to shoot life of a reality a street with human wounds, the little kids of misalliance , failed abortions,. what not..
I wont bore you to death.. on details you and I are already aware of.,.
Here the prostitutes are buying stuff of roadside vendors unaware of my presence..

the cages
imprisoned putrefying human souls
the cages of despair
an open mouthed decaying vagina
pubic postulations
pelvic grinding gyrations
rest devil may care
a human body part
also a commodity
a selling ware
two mounds
of bulbous monstrosity
drying out once a naughty pair
a creaky metal cot
two bodies that
sexual warmth
at peela house to share
venereal disease aids
the libido does not scare
no victorias secret a petticoat
unshaven pussy
no underwear
drunk, drugged depressed
they also screw and dare
the smell of stinking human sweat
urine spilt semen everywhere
wrinkled condoms washed recycled
wrenching wriggling wrestling match
they swear
even hijras men dressed as women
androgynes beware
damaged beyond redemption
fleshy bodies that souls of bodies ensnare
busted broken down
even a conservative biblical god
this sodom and gommorah
refuses to repair
pimps corner clients
take you unaware
a world where
every human soul is building
castles in the air
thanklessness in an empty envelope
sent as a menstrually bleeding prayer
this world of peela house
mumbai’s red light area cages
a blister a boil a decay
you wont get it free you pay
some discount
no credit card
with no other market
you can ever compare

Red Light Area Mumbai Cages Peela House Revisited

I took this picture last Sunday , I was contacted by an person who had assured me he would help me shoot this notorious red light area , with their help,I managed a few pictures from a room in a building where retired prostitutes stayed, first they were reluctant to allow me shoot , I told them I was making a pictorial documentary so they consented.
I took these pictures on my Nikon D80 with 17-70 Lens , and this is Life on a slow track. This was about 5 pm, business had just started, actually while climbing up the building to shoot this I was accosted by a Hijda called Heena , who sells her body in the Hijda Cages in the same building..

The Hijda Cages from the front are pathetic but at the back where I was invited they had lavish accomodations, the works, modern amenities , they did not want pictures to be taken, but I managed to shoot Heena Hijda nontheless.
Most of the Hijdas were in hotpants padded bras, and heavy makeup, they were more curious about me than I was about them.
One had the cheek to ask me if I was a Hijda..
But they were all living the dichotomy of a life that was highlit and in shadows.

Most of the red light area prostitutes have been forced into the trade , jilted by lovers and sold here , and now because they are in captivity bonded , they cannot escape, some dont want their relatives to know what they have become , hence their dislike for pictures photographers and camera.

You cannot just walk here and shoot pictures , but I did that the last time and the pimps and the prostitutes wer after my ass ..
I later shot pictures from a moving cab..

Red Light Area Mumbai Cages Peela House

mumbai cages

From Kamatipura to Chor Bazar I walked, from Chor bazar , I came to Null Bazar, walking leisurely towards the Red Light Mumbai Cages or Peela House .
The above picture is the entrance into the Red Light area from Null Bazar end, the street not seen next to the left of the Cages leads to cinema hall called Alexandra.
Many years back during the matinee shows the prostitutes waited for the film to get over, those days there were soft South Indian dubbed sleazy films, so the whores and the Hijda prostitutes got their clientele her.. inside the Peela House Lane the talkies like Alfred , and other sleazier ones were also used as pick up joints..The cops hardly patrol this area that has its own parallel Bhai or local mafioso who takes care of the area , haftagiri is the sustenance of the Indian khaki colored soul…its there everywhere..Paisa Pekh Tamasha Dekh.. throw money see the Tamasha.
My child hood friends brother in law had a gambling den here, after school he would bring us to collect his loot of the earnings of the day , we were growing up kids , this really refreshed us from all the arithmertic geography that was all history to us..
These are early memories of Peela House..
Later eating Biryani at Delhi Darbar … a landmark eatery on Preela House for the poor and special cabin seating arrangement gfor the upward mobile..
