The Sandal Carriers, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.
Mostly those who carry the sandal or sandal wood paste as offering to the Holy Saint here in Haji Malang or at other Holy Shrines go into a spontaneous spiritual trance, they can barely walk , and have to be held by the crowds and the pilgrims.
Now because offering the Sandal is an auspicious moment the group that offers the sandal or the chaddar or floral tributes hire the drummers till the walk up to the Holy Shrine.The Hijdas jam in to get money or just dance away their blues .

Hafiz Ji means teacher of scriptures.
This Hafiz Ji is from Mahim a close confidant of the Chancawalli Rafaees.
He is a very street smart and a natty dresser, likes me taking his pictures.
He too has been a great supporter over the years.

Shahenshah means Emperor , and in his case this famous Rafaee is the Emperor in body piercing art, his expertise with the sword,he pierces his tongue with the pointed blade of a dagger , and his recent act at Haji Malang , his cheek pierced to a table that he lifted finally.
He is an amazing street smart Bawa, Bawa means ascetic , mystic ..
That he is very fond of me is can be seen through my pictures.He always defends me when I am a target of some overdrugged rogue rafaee.
He sees that I am treated with respect, and he knows I dont mean the Raaees harm when I shoot their pictures .
But Rafaee is an esoteric art, that has its mystical mumbo jumbo, and they do not like it being over exposed through my pictures.Others tell me shooting their acts is sacrilege, but than Handi Pir and Shahensha Baba take up cudgels on my behalf.
And its been close to six years that I have been shooting them.
Only Handi Pir Sai has visited my tailors shop..
But last year I gave all the Rafaees sleeveless jackets , the only one that threw my jacket on the floor was my bete noir Bhandari Bawa.
Why he hates me I have never been to unravel.
Handi tells me he is in Rajasthan and suffering from some incurable disease , for having sinned against me.
I dont believe Handi , I think we pay for our sins here on earth..the greatest sin is sinning against humanity- Period.
I have not met the Chancawalli Rafees since Haji Malang..
And they did some hasty acts in the presence of Dr Glenn Losack MD ..for him to take some memories back home…
